Raenee Savin will begin her 12th season as head coach of the LIU Post field hockey team in 2014. Savin boasts an overall record of 107-96 and became the all-time winningest coach in LIU Post field hockey history in 2011.
The Pioneers recorded an unforgettable 2013 campaign as an associate member of the Northeast-10 Conference, winning 21 straight contests en route to an NE-10 title and a spot in the NCAA Championship game. The team finished with a 21-1 overall record, marking the best season in program history. Additionally, Savin became the first coach in the history of the Pioneers field hockey program to notch 100 wins, a mark she achieved in a 2-1 win over St. Michael's on October 20.
Overseeing the most successful season for an LIU Post field hockey team, Savin was named the Northeast-10 and NFHCA North Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, three players were named to the All-NE-10 First Team, while two were All-NE-10 Rookie Team Members. Carlee Dragon finished the year with a national-best 16 assists, while her 31 goals and 78 points ranked second among all players. Dragon was named NE-10 Player of the Year, ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, Synapse Sports Offensive Player of the Year and Longstreth/NFCHA First Team All-America. Dani Crouse was also recognized as the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and Longstreth/NFCHA First Team All-America, along with receiving All-NE-10 First Team accolades.
Savin’s teams have traditionally achieved great success in the classroom, receiving the NFHCA Division II National Academic Team award on a consistent basis. In 2010, the team finished with a 3.48 GPA - the second-highest team GPA in the nation. The team received the honor once again in 2014, compiling a team grade-point average of 3.24. In addition, Dani Crouse was dubbed a Scholar of Distinction for completing a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall semester.
The 2012 campaign saw the Pioneers finish with a 7-10 overall record in the team's last season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The season included a 3-2 upset victory over then-No. 10 East Stroudsburg.
In 2011, Savin led the Pioneers to their best finish since joining the PSAC with a 10-8 overall record to advance to the PSAC Championship tournament for the first time. The Pioneers knocked eventual national champion, West Chester, out of the tournament with a 2-1 double overtime victory before bowing out to Shippensburg, 4-1. Carlee Dragon finished second in the league with 22 goals and first in points per game with 2.83. She was later recognized with numerous honors, including PSAC East Athlete of the Year, Longstreth/NFHCA First Team All-America, ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and womensfieldhockey.com Offensive MVP. Lyn-Marie Wilson was recognized as a PSAC East First Team and womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie Team selection along with named the ECAC Rookie of the Year.
The 2010 season ended with a 9-10 record that included wins over nationally-ranked opponents, including a 3-2 victory over No. 10 Millersville on Oct. 11 and a 1-0 win over No. 7 Indiana (Pa.) on Nov. 6.
At the end of the season, senior forward Amanda Nann was named a Longstreth/NFHCA and womensfieldhockey.com First Team All-America and PSAC First Team selection as well as the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year. Senior goalkeeper Cortney Colern was selected Longstreth/NFHCA Second Team All-America and PSAC Second Team while Carlee Dragon was the ECAC Rookie of the Year and was named to the womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie Squad.
The Pioneers finished 2009 with an 8-9 record, going 2-5 in the conference in their second season of competition in the PSAC. The 2008 season was the first in the PSAC competition for the Pioneers, who finished with a respectable 9-8 overall record. This followed a record setting 2007, as Savin led the squad to a 16-4 record and a berth to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1983. The final NFHCA poll saw the Pioneers ranked sixth in the nation.
Savin became the 10th head coach in LIU Post field hockey history in November 2002, after serving for four seasons as an assistant coach under former head coach Jessica Hammer. During Savin’s tenure as a Pioneer assistant, the team put together three consecutive winning seasons from 2000-02, including appearances in the postseason ECAC Tournament in 2001 and 2002.
A versatile athlete during her four years at LIU Post, Savin played for four seasons with the Pioneer field hockey squad, seeing action for virtually every moment of her collegiate career. Savin also competed for four years on the LIU Post softball team, helping the squad reach the NCAA Regionals during her final three seasons.
Savin graduated from LIU Post with a degree in Physical Education in May 1999 and completed her master’s degree in Special Education in 2004. Savin and her husband, Andy Wetstein, along with their daughter, Sydney (1), reside in Nesconset, N.Y.
