Football Falls Just Short of West Chester, 17-7
WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 11, 2008) – The Pioneer defense was able to hold the West Chester University Rams to a season low 17 points on Saturday afternoon, but their fourth quarter drive fell just short as they dropped a17-7 decision on Saturday evening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference football action at Farrell Stadium in West Chester, Pa.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the East Division. C.W. Post slips to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the East Division.
West Chester drew first blood as they scored with 10:24 remaining in the first quarter, as junior quarterback completed a 14-yard pass to junior tight end Ryan Paulson, capping a 32-yard, 5 play drive that began on the C.W. Post 32 after a 36-yard punt return by Dan DePalma.
The Rams went into the half with a 7-0 lead, amassing 145 yards of total offense on 34 plays, while C.W. Post totaled 62 yards on 24 plays.
West Chester added another touchdown with 4:58 remaining in the third quarter as Wright completed a two yard pass to senior wide receiver Mike Washington. On the drive, Washington became the PSAC's all time receiving yards leader with 4,122 career receiving yards.
However, the Pioneers came right back with a drive of their own, as senior quarterback Nick Georgetti (Holbrook, N.Y.) led the Pioneers down the field, starting at their own 23. On the seventh play of the drive, they got on the scoreboard as sophomore running back Anthony Parris (North Babylon, N.Y.) caught a 14-yard pass from Georgetti to cut the lead in half, 14-7, with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter.
The Rams were able to answer right back with a field goal in the first drive of the fourth quarter as senior Alex Walsh's 33-yard field goal attempt was successful.
The Pioneers held on a third and long situation with 3:21 left in the game to give the offense another drive opportunity, and the Pioneers responded with an 11 play, 73-yard drive, but could not find the end zone on their last drive of the game.
West Chester finished the game with 347 total offensive yards on 68 plays while C.W. Post recorded 245 offensive yards on 58 plays. The Rams held a 20-16 advantage in first downs.
C.W. Post was 1 for 2 in red-zone chances while West Chester was 3 for 5. The Pioneer defense held the Rams to just seven third-down conversions out of 14 chances in the game.
Wright completed 18 of 35 pass attempts for 213 yards and two touchdowns while Georgetti was 14 for 23 with one touchdown and 158 passing yards. He also ran five times for 18 yard.
On defense, senior defensive back Kristopher Barnes (Uniondale, N.Y.) led the game in tackles with 12 (9s, 3a).
C.W. Post will play host to Millersville next Saturday, October 18. The game will also be the 2008 Homecoming Game for the Pioneers. Kick-off is slated for noon.
