Home Runs Propel Caldwell Past Baseball, 15-3

– Freshman third baseman Gabriel Molina went 3 for 4 at the plate with two home runs to drive in six runs as Caldwell College defeated C.W. Post, 15-3, in a non-conference baseball game Monday afternoon at Smith Field.

Caldwell improves to 18-13 overall on the season while C.W. Post falls to 16-18 overall.

The Pioneers took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the third when senior third baseman Steve Algarroba (Astoria, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch from Cougars starter Raymond Keelan.

Caldwell responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and added two more in the fourth. The Cougars added more runs in the fifth when Molina hit a three-run home run. The hitting continued into the sixth inning as the Cougars put up six runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of sophomore right fielder Adric Saxon as well as another three-run homer from Molina to put the Cougars ahead, 13-1.

The Pioneers added single runs in the eighth and ninth with RBI singles from junior first baseman Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) and senior second baseman Mike Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.).

Keelan picked up his first win of the season, allowing one earned run on six hits with one strikeout and one walk issued in five innings pitched. 

Junior Dan Walsh (Centereach, N.Y.) took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing four earned runs on six hits. 

In all, the Pioneer staff surrendered four home runs totaling 11 runs in the contest.

Sylvester went 3 for 5 with one RBI while sophomore shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) went 3 for 4 with a run scored.

C.W. Post will return to conference play and will play at Adelphi University on Apr. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
