ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (April 16, 2008) –
No. 13 softball swept a non-conference doubleheader, defeating the Chargers of Dominican College 6-1 in the first game, then rallying for an eight-inning, 10-7 win in the nightcap.
C.W. Post improves to 31-12 with the wins, while the Chargers drop to 18-16.
The Pioneers scored in the first inning, when Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) singled and advanced to second when Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) walked. Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) singled to left, driving in Medina for the first run. A groundout and a passed ball put runners on second and third for Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.), who hit a sac fly to left field to make the score 2-0.
Nicole Scarillo homered for the Chargers in the fourth to pull Domincan within one run.
The Pioneers broke open the game in the sixth, when Cooley singled to left and Softy followed with a home run to left. Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif) singled to center, followed by a Yodowitz homer to left for a 6-1 lead.
Yodowitz only gave up one run on four hits in six innings of work, striking out five. Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) pitched a scoreless seventh for the Pioneers.
Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.), Hippo and Softy each had two hits in the game, with Softy driving in three and scoring two runs.
The second game saw the Pioneers jump out to a big lead, only to give up six unearned runs, and find themselves down 7-6, battle back to tie the game, and then win it in the eighth.
C.W. Post jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, when Medina led off with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cooley. A Softy groundout scored Medina for the first run of the game. Hippo and Yodowitz singled and scored on Holly Eringis' (Tewksbury, Mass.) single up the middle. A hit batter loaded the bases for Katie Fisher (Boyertown, Pa.) who singled up the middle for two more runs.
The Pioneers scored two more runs in the second, when Medina single again to lead off the inning and moved to second on Cooley's sac bunt. Hippo ripped a two-run home run to center, pushing the Pioneer lead to 6-0.
The Chargers scored three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-3, and four more runs in the fifth gave Dominican a 7-6 lead.
C.W. Post answered back in the top of the sixth when Fisher doubled with one out, and scored on Medina's single to the shortstop.
A scoreless seventh set the stage for the Pioneers in the eighth, when Eringis singled and Katie Younes (Amesbury, Mass.) laid down a bunt. The Chargers tried to throw Eringis out at second, but she beat the throw and put runners on first and second for Katie Fisher, who bunted but beat the throw to first for a single. The ball got away from the first baseman and the Charger right fielder threw to the plate to try to get Eringis, but the throw sailed out of play, scoring both Eringis and Younes with Fisher advancing to second. She was sacrificed over to third by Aiello and scored on Medina's single.
Yodowitz picked up her second win of the day, throwing 3.1 innings in relief of starter Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.), who gave up five runs (one earned) on seven hits. Yodowitz gave up only three hits and did not allow a run as she improved to 17-6 on the season.
Fisher and Medina each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the offense, with Fisher driving in four runs and Medina driving in two. Eringis, Softy and Hippo each had two hits.
The Pioneers will next host Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, April 19, followed by UMass-Lowell on Sunday, April 20, with both games starting at noon.
