BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 19, 2008) - The 13th-ranked softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University, winning the first game by a 10-1 count, before winning the second game on a five-run, seventh inning comeback by a final score of 12-11. Prior to the game, the Pioneers recognized their senior class of #Samantha Yodowitz# (Suffern, N.Y.), Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.), Holly Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass.), and Katie Younes (Amesbury, Mass.).
The wins push the Pioneers to 33-12 overall, while the Penmen drop to 9-14.
The first game saw the Penmen take a 1-0 lead on a run scoring double from Casey Stoodley, but the Pioneers answered right back in the second when a Katie Fisher (Boyertown, Pa.) double to right center scored Yodowitz who had singled. Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.) followed Fisher with an RBI single, and an RBI groundout by Cooley rounded out the scoring.
The third inning saw C.W. Post score five runs, capped by a Yodowitz home run to left field, to takae a 8-1 lead.
Another run in the fourth off another Fisher double scored the ninth run of the game for the Pioneers, and a 1-2-3 inning by the Penmen in the fifth ended the game due to the mercy rule.
Yodowitz earned the win for the Pioneers with four innings of work, giving up only one run on four hits while striking out five to improve to 18-6 on the year. Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.)worked a scoreless fifth inning of relief, striking out two.
The Pioneers were paced by the offensive performances of Medina, Yodowitz, Fisher and Aiello, who each had two hits in the win.
The second game saw the Penmen score early once again, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Michelle Maranto.
The Pioneers tied the game when they scored a run in their half of the first on a Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) RBI single, and then took the lead in the second when they scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Younes and Fisher.
The Penment scored a run in the third, but another run by the Pioneers in their half of the third pushed the lead back to four, 6-2.
However, a six-run SNHU inning, capped by a grandslam from Stoodley, gave the Penmen an 8-6 lead over the Pioneers.
C.W. Post rallied in the sixth for a run courtesy of a Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif.) RBI single, but a three-run seventh inning for the Penmen gave the Pioneers an 11-7 defecit heading into the seventh.
Aiello worked a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and one batter later, Cooley was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Softy, who took the first pitch she saw and stroked it into left center for a three-run home run, pulling the Pioneers within one. Hippo came to the plate and followed suit, slamming the first pitch of the at-bat to left field for a game tying homer. Yodowitz worked a walk and stole second, and came around to score the winning run on Eringis' RBI single to centerfield.
The seventh inning heroics made a winner out of Kiser, who threw 3.1 innings of four-hit ball in relief ofstarter Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) who was tagged for eight runs on four hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Softy went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Pioneers, who also got multi-hit outings from Medina, Hippo, Younes, Fisher and Aiello.
