BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 20, 2008) -
Solid pitching and timely hitting were both key in No. 13 softball's sweep of University of Massachusetts-Lowell, as the Pioneers beat the River Hawks 3-0 in the first game, then took the nightcap by a 4-2 score on Sunday afternoon.
The wins improve the Pioneers to 35-12, and have won six in a row, while the River Hawks drop to even at 18-18.
C.W. Post got on the board in the fourth inning, when Holly Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a single, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers their first run of the game.
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the fifth when Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif.) singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Katie Younes' (Amesbury, Mass. ) RBI single to right field.
Another insurance run in the sixth rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers, as Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) roped an RBI triple to right.
Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) had another strong outing for the Pioneers, allowing only one hit – an infield single – as she improved to 19-6 on the season. Yodowitz struck out five and walked just one.
Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.) went 3-for-3 to lead the Pioneers, who also got multiple hits from Eringis and Cooley.
Game two saw another strong pitching matchup, as the Pioneers managed just four hits against River Hawk starter Nikki Monroe. C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
After the first run, both teams put up zero's until the sixth inning, when Stacy Lajoie singled on an infield error to tie the game at one.
A three-run sixth inning gave the Pioneers a 4-1 lead, and although the River Hawks got a run back in the seventh, they were unable to muster anymore offense against Pioneer starter Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.).
Berardi allowed just two runs on five hits, striking out five while walking one.
Head coach Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers travel to Georgian Court for a regional match-up on Tuesday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m., and then host ECC foe Queens College at home at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21.
