LAKEWOOD, N.J. (April 22, 2008) – The 13th-ranked Pioneers split a doubleheader with No. 21 Georgian Court, winning game one by an 8-5 score before dropping the nightcap, 2-0.
The Pioneers move to 36-12 with the split while the Lions now stand at 33-11.
The first game saw the Pioneers jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) and Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) each singled and scored, Medina on a wild pitch, and Softy on a Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) RBI single.
Two more runs in the fifth courtesy of a Softy RBI double and another Yodowitz RBI single doubled the Pioneer lead, and a four-run seventh gave C.W. Post a commanding lead, one that they would need as the Lions rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately fell short as the Pioneers held on for the win.
Yodowitz earned the win giving up two runs on six hits, improving to 20-6 on the season. She also went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the game. Medina had a 4-for-4 outing, Softy went 3-for-4, and Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif.) went 2-for-4. Katie Younes (Amesbury, Mass.) had a two-run home run for the Pioneers.
In the second game, the Lions touched Pioneer starter Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) for two runs in the first inning, and Lion pitcher Samantha Sasko shut down the C.W. Post offense, allowing only eight hits and striking out ten in the shutout.
The Pioneers had a chance in the fourth, when, with runners on first and second, Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) singled to left, but pinch-runner Alyssa Gerrish (Hanover, Mass.) was thrown out at the plate in an extremely close play.
Berardi drops to 14-7 on the season, despite allowing only five hits and striking out seven. Medina and Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) were the only Pioneers to record multiple hits in the game, both going 2-for-4.
The Pioneers return home tomorrow as the host Queens College on Wednesday, April 23, at 3 p.m.
