No. 13 Softball Splits With Queens; 9-1, 2-1

– The C.W. Post softball team split a conference doubleheader with Queens College, taking the first game, 9-1, before surrendering to the Knights, 2-1.

C.W. Post improves its overall record to 37-14 and 14-2 in the conference. Queens improves its record to 15-27 overall and 8-10 in conference play.

The Pioneers took just over an hour to win the first game in five innings. Sophomore catcher Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) drove in the deciding run in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle to score sophomore centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) from second.

C.W. Post scored two five runs through the first three innings before the Knights scored their lone run in the top of the fourth when rightfielder Danielle Digioia doubled to left center to score third baseman Sara Koumou from second base.

The Pioneers added three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore leftfielder Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple to right center and came around to score on a single to left field from Medina. Junior catcher Melissa Hippo (Granite City, Calif.) singled to centerfield that scored Medina from second. Senior shortstop Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) advanced to third on the play and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.

Hippo, Softy and Medina all registered two hits and two RBI for the Pioneers.

Senior Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) won her 21st game of the season, pitching five innings and surrendering one run on four hits while striking out four batters. Sophomore Christy Sanders took the loss for the Knights, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking five.

In the nightcap, the winning run was scored in the top of the sixth when freshman centerfielder Samantha Stallone singled through the right side to score Miracco from third.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Sophomore catcher Katie Miracco singled to right center to score freshman third baseman Sara Koumou from second.

The Pioneers answered back in the bottom half of the first when Softy singled through the left side to score Medina, who earlier had advanced to third on a passed ball, to tie the game. 

Miracco went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run with a run scored. Hippo led the Pioneer offense with two hits.

Senior pitcher Jessica Hicks earned her fourth win of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing one run on six hits while striking out four and walking one batter.

Freshman Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out two and walking three.
