BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 27, 2008) – The 11th-ranked Pioneers swept a doubleheader from Mercy College, winning the first game by a 7-0 count and taking the second game 5-0. With the wins, the Pioneers clinch the East Coast Conference Regular Season title. The Pioneers have won six of the last seven ECC Regular Season titles dating back to 2002.
C.W. Post improves its record to 41-14 and 18-2 in the conference; the first time in program history the Pioneers have broken the 40-win barrier in regular-season play. The Mavericks drop to 9-30 overall and 2-18 in the East Coast Conference.
The Pioneers used two big innings in the first game to give starter
Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) all the offense she would need as she gave up only five hits and struck out six batters, improving to 23-6 on the season.
The second inning saw the Pioneers get their first run when
Katie Fisher's (Boyertown, Pa.) RBI double scored
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.), who reached on a fielder's choice.
Amanda Aiello's (Charlton, Mass.) RBI single up the middle, scoring Fisher, and advancing to second on the throw to the plate.
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with another single, scoring Aiello, with Medina advancing to second on the throw to the plate.
Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) singled, moving Medina to third, followed by
Christie Softy's (Floral Park, N.Y.) single to left, scoring Medina.
The Pioneers pushed across three more runs in the fourth, as Fisher and Aiello led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Medina's single scored Fisher, and the throw just beat Aiello to the plate for the first out of the inning, with Medina advancing to second on the play. A double by Cooley scored Medina, and one batter later,
Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif.) doubled in Cooley for a 7-0 lead.
C.W. Post was led offensively in the game by Medina, Cooley and Aiello with three hits apiece, and Fisher with a two-hit outing.
The second game featured freshman
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) in another strong outing, notching a one-hitter with nine strikeouts against the Mavericks.
C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead in the second courtesy of a
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) RBI double that scored Hippo, who had earlier singled.
The Pioneers doubled the lead an inning later in the third when Aiello singled and scored on Softy's RBI single to center.
Fisher led off the sixth with a home run to left field, and the Pioneers pushed two more runs across, helped by two Mercy errors and an RBI single for Hippo.
Berardi improved to 16-8 on the season, while Hippo went 4-for-4 and Fisher had a 2-for-4 effort.
The Pioneers clinch the top seed in the upcoming ECC Tournament. Dates and times for the tournament's games will be announced later this week.
