BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 6, 2008) - The softball team split a doubleheader with East Coast Conference rival Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke field, losing the first game by a 2-1 score but rebounding to take the nightcap, 3-1.
The Pioneers are now 22-11 overall and 7-1 in ECC play, while Adelphi stands at 18-14 overall, 6-2 in conference play.
The first game saw a battle of senior pitchers, between C.W. Post's
Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) and Adelphi's Julie Schaper.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, when
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) hit a two-out RBI single, scoring
Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif.) from second base.
Yodowitz took a no-hitter into the sixth, but with two outs and runners on second and third, Samantha Johnston singled to drive in two runs and give the Panthers the lead, and eventually, the win.
The Pioneer offense struggled against Schaper, who struck out thirteen batters and allowed hits to only Yodowitz and Correia. Yodowitz was equally as dominant as the hardluck loser, also allowing only two hits while striking out six, with no walks issued by the southpaw.
The second game saw the Pioneers have a breakout first inning, scoring three runs, then use dominant pitching and stifling defense to shut the Panthers down for the rest of the game.
Kelsey Cooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) got the first inning scoring started, as she singled and advanced to second on an error on a Yodowitz grounder. Shortstop
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) doubled, driving in Cooley and Yodowitz, then
Holly Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled in Softy for the third run.
Adelphi got a run back in the third, when Dely Francisco walked, stole second, and came around to score on a Kristin Brennan single up the middle.
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass) shut the Panthers down the rest of the way, allowing only five hits and and one walk while striking out eight. Adelphi's Christine Robinson took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits and four walks.
Cooley, Softy and Eringis each picked up two hits for the Pioneers, while
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Katie Fisher (Boyertown, Pa.) each notched singles.
Francisco went 2-for-3 for the Panthers.Head coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers host another ECC matchup on Tuesday, April 8, when they take on New Haven. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
