Softball Takes Two From New Haven; 3-0, 4-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 8, 2008) – The softball team swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from the University of New Haven, shutting out the chargers in both games, 3-0 and 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 24-11 and 9-1 in East Coast Conference, while New Haven drops to 9-13 and 2-6 in conference play.
C.W. Post got on the board in the bottom of the first, when UNH starter Meg Brown walked the first three batters to load the bases.
Melissa Hippo (Granite Bay, Calif.) grounded to the first baseman, who threw home for the out, but the catcher's return throw to first got away from the New Haven second baseman, allowing
Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.) to score.
The Pioneers got two more runs in the fourth, when
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) walked, and moved to second on
Katie Younes' (Newbury, Mass.) single to right.
Katie Fisher (Boyertown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Medina, who singled up the middle to plate Younes and Correia.
Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) improved to 12-6 on the season, blanking the Chargers for her fourth shutout of the year, and allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters.
Medina notched two hits for the Pioneers and Younes had the only other hit in the game.
Game two saw the Pioneers' bats come alive against UNH starter Breanne Gleason, while another strong performance in the circle from
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) shutout the Chargers in the nightcap.
The Pioneers scored early again, when a Correia single scored
Holly Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass.) from third. Softy's solo home run in the fourth doubled the C.W. Post lead, followed by a double by Eringis and an RBI double by Younes.
A solo homerun by Hippo in the sixth rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers.
Berardi improved to 11-5 on the season and picked up her seventh shutout, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out 10. Hippo and Eringis each had two hits to pace the offense.
The Pioneers travel to neighboring NYIT on Saturday, for a noon doubleheader.
