No. 9 Softball Advances Past New Haven, 8-7, At Northeast Regional

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 7, 2008) – Senior
Samantha Yodowitz (Suffern, N.Y.) batted 2 for 3 at the plate, including a two-run home run, and pitched her 26th complete game as top-seeded C.W. Post captured an 8-7 win over East Coast Conference opponent, New Haven, in the opening round of the NCAA Northeast Region Softball Championship tournament Wednesday afternoon at C.W. Post.
The Pioneers, who are ranked ninth in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Poll (NFCA), improve their overall record to 45-14 and will play Caldwell College Thursday afternoon at 4:40 p.m. Caldwell defeated Georgian Court earlier in the day. New Haven slips to 25-20 and will face Georgian Court (40-15) Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m.
The Pioneers scored eight runs through the first two innings, including a two-run home run to left field from senior first baseman
Holly Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the first inning as well as a two-run opposite field shot from Yodowitz in the second inning.
The Chargers responded in the third with a bases-clearing double to left field off the bat of freshman second baseman Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y).
New Haven rallied to score four runs on three Pioneer errors in the seventh. Garland led off the inning with a single down the left field line and later scored on an error by the catcher. An RBI singled added another run, and an outfield throwing error tacked on another unearned run, cutting the Pioneers' lead to 8-6. Junior third baseman Jessica Medina (Hopewell Jct., N.Y.) drove in the fourth run on a single through the right side. The game ended when junior catcher Jordanna Borska (Commack, N.Y.) popped up to Younes for the final out.
The Pioneers completed the game out-hitting the Chargers by a 13-7 margin. Sophomore centerfielder
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) went 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored while three other Pioneers recorded two hits. Senior second baseman
Katie Younes (Newbury, Mass.) recorded her first career triple in the first inning.
Yodowitz went the distance in the circle, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Sophomore Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn.) took the loss, pitching 1.2 innings and letting up eight earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two. Junior Meg Brown (Schenectady, N.Y.) came in relief in the second and completed the game with just three hits and two strikeouts.
Garland led the Chargers with two hits that drove in three runs with a run scored.
