Box Score
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 24, 2009) – The C.W. Post Pioneers improved their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference east division record to 4-2 with a 42-24 win over the East Stroudsburg Warriors Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The win snaps a five-game losing streak against ESU dating back to 1981.
Overall, C.W. Post is 4-5 this season while East Stroudsburg drops to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in division play.
Freshman running back Thomas Beverly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) carried the ball 31 times for a season-high 170 yards that greatly helped the Pioneers move the ball downfield. Beverly now has 918 rushing yards this season.
Junior quarterback Eric Anderwkavich (Queens, N.Y.) (15-25-0) passed for 232 yards that included three touchdown completions. On the receiving end was junior Darnal Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who made six catches for 66 yards and two TD receptions. Junior Andrew Kell (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) caught three passes for 37 yards that included a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Both teams unleashed a fury of scoring in the first quarter. The Warriors drew first blood at 11:39 in the first quarter when they regained possession after recovering a forced fumble from Beverly at the C.W. Post 44. Penalty flags were thrown immediately after the play for unsportsmanlike conduct against the Pioneers, setting up 1st-and-10 from the CWP 29. From there, redshirt junior quarterback Matt Marshall (York, Pa.) completed an 8-yard pass to redshirt junior fullback Brent Jones (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) that set up for a 21-yard dash into the endzone from freshman tailback Kendrick Williams (Hamilton, N.J.) as part of a two-play, 44-yard and 22-second drive for the Warriors.
The Pioneers answered in their next series when Anderwkavich completed a 43-yard pass to redshirt sophomore wide receiver Grayson Laurino (Boise, Idaho) that brought the ball to the ESU 1-yard line. Anderwkavich kept the ball on the next play and plunged into the endzone for the score.
East Stroudsburg scored its second TD of the game after recovering another forced fumble at the CWP 22. Marshall completed a pass to redshirt junior wide receiver (Red Lion, Pa.) at the CWP 2 before sustained back-to-back sacks from defensive specialists Xavier Brown (Bay Shore, N.Y.)/Tayrance Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Lou Scala (Coram, N.Y.) for a total loss of 16 yards. But Marshall was able to recover and fired an 18-yard pass to redshirt wide receiver Sam Shuman (Lancaster, Pa.) to put the Warriors ahead, 14-7.
The Pioneers scored in their next drive as Anderwkavich completed a 32-yard pass to senior wide receiver Chris Harris (Islip, N.Y.) and Beverly rushed for 14 yards to the ESU 3. The touchdown was scored on the next play as Anderwkavich tossed the ball to an already waiting Williams in the endzone.
The Warriors' offense did not let up in the first quarter as they scored their third touchdown during the next series as Marshall completed a 23-yard pass to redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Hallman (Elizabethtown, Pa.) as part of an eight-play, 47-yard drive with 2:03 remaining in the quarter to give the home team a 21-14 lead.
C.W. Post once again tied the game up in the second quarter when Scala intercepted a pass from Marshall and returned it for a 37-yard touchdown.
At the half, the Pioneers held a 244-171 margin in total offense yards.
C.W. Post scored in the first drive of the third quarter when Anderwkavich completed a 10-yard pass to Kell as part of an 11 play, 62-yard drive. The score gave the Pioneers a 28-21 lead that they never relinquished for the remainder of the game.
East Stroudsburg got the ball back with 10:22 in the quarter and marched down the field to the CWP 9 before redshirt junior kicker Drew Reinhard (Emmaus, Pa.) kicked a field goal at 5:13.
The Pioneers comforted their lead to 35-24 after scoring their touchdown of the quarter when Anderwkavich found Williams for a 30-yard touchdown completion at 3:24.
The Warriors had an opportunity in the fourth to regain their footing when Anderwkavich fumbled the ball at the ESU 39 that was recovered by freshman defensive end Kevon Brown (Thorofare, N.J.) at the 50-yard line. Marshall completed a 14-yard pass to redshirt junior wide receiver Jeff Giglio (Easton, Pa.) that moved the ball to the CWP 36. But that was as far as the Warriors would get as Marshall threw three straight incomplete passes.
C.W. Post closed the game out with 2:59 remaining in the game when graduate linebacker Peter Manns (Dorchester, Mass.) intercepted a pass from Marshall at the ESU 44 and returned it for the game's final touchdown.
Manns and sophomore Billy O'Connor (Sayville, N.Y.) each made 12 defensive tackles for the Pioneers. Manns also added a sack for loss of nine yards and two tackles for loss of 10 and a 44-yard interception return.
Marshall (18-41-2) completed the game with 155 passing yards for two touchdowns.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Taylor Cave (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Warriors with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery. Redshirt junior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton, Pa.) added 11 tackles.
C.W. Post returns home to host Kutztown University on Saturday, Oct. 31 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
