Anderwkavich Leads Football Past Kutztown, 42-17

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2009) – Junior quarterback Eric Anderwkavich (Queens, N.Y.) completed four touchdown passes and rushed in another two as C.W Post won its fifth conference game with a 42-17 win over Kutztown University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East division football clash Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.
C.W. Post wins its third straight contest and improves to 5-5 overall and 5-2 in division play while Kutztown drops to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in division play.
Anderwkavich completed the game with 65 rushing yards and completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for 302 yards and four touchdowns. On the receiving end was junior Darnal Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who caught eight passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
C.W. Post amassed 441 yards on 69 plays while Kutztown compiled 300 yards on 62 plays.
C.W. Post took a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. Anderwkavich found an open Andrew Kell (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) for a 25-yard touchdown completion at 12:01. The Pioneers regained possession when junior defensive end Xavier Brown (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recovered a Golden Bear fumble that was forced by Lou Scala (Coram, N.Y.) at the Kutztown 39. The home team made good took advantage of the opportunity and Anderwkavich fired a 39-yard strike to an open Chris Harris (Islip, N.Y.) on the first play of the drive at 10:57.
Kutztown cut the lead in the half during the next series when freshman quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, Pa.) held onto the ball and broke through to the endzone for a four-yard rush with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter.
The Pioneers added two more scores before the end of the half. Anderwkavich completed a four-yard pass to Williams in the first play of the quarter to cushion their lead to 21-7.
Kutztown got as far as its own 18 in its next series before having to punt away. Junior Matt Dineen's (Wilmington, Pa.) punt was quickly knocked down by heavy wind and the ball was downed on the Kutztown 28. At 1st-and-10, Anderwkavich tossed a two-yard pass to Williams before keeping the ball on the play and hit paydirt on a 26-yard rush.
The Golden Bears put one more score up before the end of the half when Dineen hit a 38-yard field goal with two minutes on the clock.
Kutztown opened the third quarter with possession on its own 27 but an errant pass from Morton was intercepted by sophomore defensive back Norman Smith (Jersey City, N.J.) at the KU 46 and returned seven yards to the 39. The Pioneers were able to move the ball downfield to the KU 15 before Anderwkavich completed a pass to Williams in the endzone for the Pioneers' fifth touchdown of the game at 12:51.
The Golden Bears scored their second touchdown of the game when Morton completed a pass to freshman wide receiver Chris McCormick (West Chester, Pa.) as part of a 12-play, 95-yard drive with 7:50 remaining in regulation.
The Pioneers scored the final touchdown of the game when Anderwkavich tried for a quarterback sneak from the KU 2-yard line and pushed through to the endzone.
In all, the Pioneers scored in six of their 10 series in the game.
Senior outside linebacker Tayrance Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and graduate linebacker Peter Manns (Dorchester, Mass.) each made 10 tackles on the day.
Morton completed 21 of 41 pass attempts with one interception for 238 yards and one touchdown in the game. Junior free safety Khalief Evans (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the game with 11 tackles while also recording a forced fumble.
