OAKDALE, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2009) – Freshman Kirsten Taylor (South Pasadena, Calif.) and junior #Marilena Guadagnini# (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each tallied 12 kills but it was not enough as C.W. Post lost a tight match to the University of Bridgeport in five sets, 3-2, in the semifinal round of the East Coast Conference volleyball championships played Friday evening at Dowling Gymnasium. The match scores were 15-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22 and 14-16.
The win improves Bridgeport to 30-6 overall as the Purple Knights move on to face Dowling in the final round Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The loss effectively ends the Pioneers' chances of an NCAA berth as they complete their season with a 14-14 overall record.
Graduate outside hitter Agatha Baliddawa (Jinja, Uganda) led the Purple Knights with 22 kills while making five defensive blocks. Senior setter Milica Micovic (Belgrade, Serbia) registered a match-high 42 assists for Bridgeport.
For the Pioneers, freshman outside hitter
Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.) led the team with 16 defensive digs. Junior outside hitter
Lauren Brown (Mount Gilead, N.C.) helped out with 15 defensive digs and four blocks.
C.W. Post held a 10-7 lead in the fifth set before a flurry of attacks from Bridgeport allowed the Purple Knights to eventually tie the game up at 11-all, the first of four ties toward the end of the set. Bridgeport went ahead 15-14 on kill from junior outside hitter Terry Masava (Nairobi, Kenya) and won the match on a Pioneer attacking error.
