KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 9, 2009) –
The tenth-ranked C.W. Post softball team split a doubleheader in its second day of action at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Florida, losing 9-2 to St. Could State in the opener but coming back to defeat Northeast Regional opponent Stonehill College in the nightcap, blanking the Skyhawks 3-0.
The Pioneers evened their record at 2-2 on the day.
In the first game, C.W. Post took an early lead as junior outfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) reached on a bunt single and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs and runners on first and second, junior outfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) singled up the middle, but senior designated player Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) was thrown out on a close play at the plate to end the inning.
The lead would prove to be short lived as St. Cloud tied the game in the second on an RBI single to left.
Two runs in the third for St. Cloud put them on top 3-1. The Pioneers came right back in the bottom of the third and cut the lead to one, as Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) singled home Ashley Marchese (Hauppague, N.Yl).
But St. Cloud would score three more runs as the Pioneers made two errors in the fourth, and they would get another three in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Pioneers.
Medina had two hits for the Pioneers in the loss, and freshman Hayley Choquette-Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) took the loss with a final line of four runs on seven hits in three innings.
Game two saw the Pioneers jump out early yet again, as Kendall Bright (Fayetteville-Manilus, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the bottom of the third. She scored on Medina's single down the left field lne. Medina stole second and scored on Marchese's double down the line to put the Pioneers up 2-0.
Fisher would add another run in the fourth as the homered to left center for her first four-bagger of the year.
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) blanked the Skyhawks for seven innings, giving up five hits and striking out six in the shutout.
The Pioneers will play another doubleheader tomorrow as they take on LeMoyne at 3 p.m. and Ashland at 5 p.m.
