KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 11, 2009) - The softball team suffered two losses at the Rebel Games on Wednesday afternoon, losing the opener to Le Moyne College, 3-0, before falling to Ashland in the nightcap, 4-3.
Le Moyne got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as junior Bailey Philips scored on a fielding error. The Dolphins got two more runs in the fifth inning when Delle VanGorder scored on a Phillips single followed by a C.W. Post fielding error. Phillips came around to score on a single by freshman Barbara Shea.
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) was the hard luck loser for the Pioneers, giving up only four hits and no earned runs in six innings. Jenna Vanacore also gave up four hits in the shutout.
The second game saw the teams play two scoreless innings, until Ashland jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the third courtesy of a three-run double from Erin Porter.
However, the Pioneers answered right back as three consecutive singles loaded the bases for
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.), who's fielders choice drove in a run and put runners on second and third for
Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.). Kulnis singled to drive in two more runs, tying the game at three runs apiece.
The Eagles singled to lead off the top of the seventh and with two outs, Logan Hursey knocked a single to shallow right field to drive in the run and give Ashland the lead, 4-3. The Pioneers put a runner on second with only one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Hursey struck out the last two batters to seal the win.
Hayley Choquette-Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) took the loss, tossing seven innings and scattering 10 hits. Hursey was the winning pitcher giving up nine hits and striking out five.
Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) and
Ashley Marchese (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers continue their Florida trip with a doubleheader on Thursday, and another doubleheader on Saturday.
