KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 14, 2009) -
Sophomore pitcher Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass) threw a no-hit shutout in leading the 21st-ranked softball team past regional rival Caldwell College in the opener, but the Pioneers could not complete a comeback attempt in the nightcap as they dropped a 6-5 decision to Wayne State.
C.W. Post ends its southern swing with a 4-6 record overall.
Game one was a pitching battle for most of the game, as C.W. Post had runners in scoring position the first three innings of play but could not find a way to score as the teams played five scoreless innings.
The Pioneers took the lead in the sixth as senior designated player Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) walked to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Lindsey Trotto (xx) moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior outfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.). A groundout by freshman Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) moved Trotto to third, and she scored on freshman catcher Kristen Morcones (xx) single to center.
Sophomore hurler Berardiblanked the Cougars for all seven innings, walking two and striking out four in the no-no.  Freshman Juliette Wilson took the loss, going 5.1 inning s giving up three hits and striking out five. Kaitlyn McFarlane held the Pioneers hitless in two-thirds of an inning in relief.
The nightcap saw the Pioneers spot Wayne State six runs in a big second inning and despite a comeback attempt, C.W. Post could not overcome the six run deficit.
The second inning saw Wayne State take a 6-0 lead as the Pioneers made three errors in the inning and pitcher Hayley Choquette-Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) gave up a grand slam to Alison Allen.
The Pioneers got a run back in their half of the inning as a bases loaded walk to Katie Fisher plated a run.
A home run by Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) in the bottom of the fifth made the score 6-2. Singles by freshman Kendall Bright (Fayetteville-Manilus) and Kerry Fisher put runners on the corners for Morcone, who's fielders choice grounder scored Bright to pull the Pioneers to 6-3.
Two more runs in the sixth came when Softy doubled home Ashley Marchese (Hauppauge, N.Y.), who had singled. Softy scored on a dropped third strike and throwing error by the catcher to pull within one run, but reliever Casey Hanes shut the Pioneers down in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) threw four innings of shutout relief of Bettles, giving up only two hits and striking out eight. Bettles was tagged with the loss giving up two hits and no earned runs, striking out two.
The Pioneers will play their home opener next Saturday as they take on American International College on March 21st at 1:30 p.m., followed by another doubleheader against Le Moyne on Sunday the 22nd, first pitch slated for noon.
