Softball Splits With Southern Connecticut; Pioneers Lose 3-2 In Nine Innings Before Bouncing Back With 2-0 Win In Nightcap

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 26, 2009) – The C.W. Post softball team earned a split a non-conference doubleheader with Southern Connecticut State University, losing the opener, 3-2, in nine innings before rebounding with a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
C.W. Post is now 10-8 overall while Southern Connecticut drops to 11-3.
Freshman second baseman
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) batted 3-for-6 and drove in all four Pioneer runs.
In the first game, the Owls junior shortstop Megan Caporossi knocked in the game's first run with a one-run home run in the bottom of the first.
The Pioneers evened the score in the third when Fisher singled to score senior first baseman
Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) from second base. C.W. Post took the lead in the fifth inning when Fisher hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring junior centerfielder
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) from third.
Southern Connecticut tied the game up in the sixth when senior first baseman Brittany Gandley scored the second run with a home run.
Neither team scored in the seventh, forcing the game went into extra frames. In the bottom of the ninth, junior catcher Khristle Lee came to the plate with one out and two runners on and drove in the game-winning run with a single.
Freshman Jayme Larson got the win, keeping the Pioneers scoreless the final four innings and allowing just two hits. Junior Kerry Iacomini started the game for the Owls and pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Sophomore
Morgan Bell (Branchville, N.J.) took the loss for C.W. Post, pitching two and a third innings and allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out one batter. Sophomore
Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) started the game and completed six innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
In the second game, C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Fisher singled to score Medina from second. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the fifth when Fisher hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Medina, who led off the inning with a triple to left center.
Sophomore
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) went the distance and allowed just two hits while striking out nine batters for the win. Medina went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for C.W. Post.
Senior Amanda Pindar took the loss, pitching five complete innings allowing one earned run on three hits.
C.W. Post returns to action Saturday, March 28 when its hosts a noontime conference doubleheader against Dowling College.
