Football Comes Up Short In Season Opener Against American International, 21-6

Junior quarterback Rob Parent (West Warwick, R.I.) passed for 180 yards and rushed for a touchdown as American International College defeated C.W. Post, 21-6, Saturday afternoon in football action on Hickox Field. It was the season opener for both teams.
 
American International, who made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2008, has won three straight against the Pioneers and improves to 1-0 on the season. AIC will return to action at Merrimack Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. The Pioneers lose their third straight season opener and will play on the road at Indiana (Pa.) on Sept. 5.
 
Parent was 17 for 29 in pass attempts with one interception in game. Freshman running back Jermayne Capdeville (Springfield, Mass.) led the ground attack for the Yellow Jackets with 85 net rushing yards, including a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
 
The Yellow Jackets got on the board with a 1-yard run from Parent at 9:38 followed a successful point after attempt from senior Justin Sokoloff (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
 
The Pioneers answered with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter when senior Chris Harris (Islip, N.Y.) took a handoff from junior quarterback Eric Anderwkavich (Queens, N.Y.). Junior Jon Korn's (Shirley, N.Y.) PAT failed and C.W. Post trailed 7-6.
 
AIC hit paydirt for the second time in the game with 28 seconds left in the half on a 22-yard completed pass from Parent to senior wide receiver Kertis Hussey (Paterson, N.J.) to take a 14-6 lead at the end of the half.
 
C.W. Post attempted to close the gap with 33 seconds to spare in the third quarter when Anderwkavich completed a pass to redshirt freshman Grayson Laurino (Boise, Idaho) in the endzone, but the play was called back on account of holding on the Pioneers.
 
Anderwkavich completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 96 yards. Redshirt sophomore #R.J. Kuhn# (Sayville, N.Y.) was 7-for-17 with 66 pass yards for the Pioneers.
 
The Pioneer defense was highlighted by five sacks, including two from junior defensive lineman Xavier Brown (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who had two for loss of 13. Senior Peter Manns (Dorchester, Mass.) made 12 tackles (5s, 7a).
 
The Yellow Jacket defense was led by junior linebacker George Hudson (Philadelphia, Pa.).
