Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2010) – C.W. Post was not able to pull off the upset against one of the conference favorites in the Purple Knights of Bridgeport. The Pioneers fought hard from beginning to finish, but eventually would drop the five-game match to the Purple Knights, 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 20-25, 25-23, 12-15). Freshman
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) had her fifth double-double on the year with 12 kills and 14 digs.
With a strong effort from the beginning, the Pioneers were able to take the first match. The team ended up with a .300 hitting percentage in the first set, the best percentage for the Pioneers in any set on the night.
The second and third game would belong to Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights would take the 2-1 game lead in the match. In the second set, the Purple Knights hit an outstanding .550 (12-1-20). In the following third set, Bridgeport would tally 19 kills, opposed to C.W. Post's 13 kills.
C.W. Post would fight back in the fourth set, going back and forth with the Purple Knights. Eventually, the Pioneers would come out on top 25-23, forcing a pivotal and match clinching fifth game.
After taking a 13-8 lead in the fifth game, Bridgeport would have an attack blocked by Namahoe. This block seemed to give the momentum back to the Pioneers, as senior
Kim Lubeski (Bishopville, Md.) would sub back into the game to take over serving duties. Lubeski played some excellent serves, including one service ace. However, this would prove to not be enough as Bridgeport would convert on a game point situation to take the game and match.
Joining Namahoe for the team lead in kills with 12 was sophomore
Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.), entering double-digits in kills for the sixth time this season. Once again, many of the Pioneers kills were set up by senior
Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.) who assisted on 48 of 55 kills.
On the defensive side of the net, Namahoe and fellow freshman
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) helped lead the team to a total of 9 team blocks. Namahoe posted one solo block and five block assists, as Schroer also matched the number of block assists. Freshman
Stephanie Coufal (Littleton, Colo.) was the leader in the back for the Pioneers, as she tallied a team high 22 digs from her libero position. Senior
Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) would also contribute 21 digs. The senior was also one kill away from recording her 10
th double-double of the year.
The Purple Knights were led by three players with double-doubles. Graduate Student Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasi registered a match-high 19 kills, as well as having 11 digs. Senior Terry Masava would contribute 12 kills and 11 digs, and junior setter Tamara Leite would lead all participants with 51 assists, along with 19 digs.
The win pushes the Purple Knights winning streak to 12, with a 15-1 record and 5-0 conference mark. The Pioneers now drop to 2-3 in conference, 14-8 overall as they will host Queens on Thursday Oct. 14. The match is set for 7 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center.
