Volleyball Uses a Dominant Fourth Game to Defeat Queens, 3-1
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2010) – Senior
Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and her tenth double-double, 14 kills and 16 digs, on the year was more than enough to help lead C.W. Post over the Knights of Queens in four games, 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23, 25-7). This game now puts the Pioneers in sole possession of fourth place in the East Coast Conference standings.
Guadagnini led strong a Pioneer attack in the first game, where she notched seven of her 14 kills and hitting .438. After being down 12-18, the Pioneers would battle back to take the first game with the services from freshman
Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) helping to lead the way. Hixson would help lead the Pioneers back into the game, as C.W. Post would end up taking the set, 25-22, off a Queens attacking error.
Hitting .571 in the second set, sophomore
Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.) would lead the Pioneers in the second set in a more convincing 25-18 second set win. Fisher tallied four kills with her hitting percentage. C.W. Post would start out the game with a quick 5-0 lead, before eventually finding
themselves up 16-8. The match would balance out from there for the rest of the set. However, the early quick lead by the Pioneers would prove to be too much.
Queens would avenge a game in the third set, which would end up being the most competitive game of the match. Each team would go back and forth, point for point before Queens would eventually jump out to the biggest lead of the set of 16-20 behind the attacking skills of senior Crystal Gordon. Gordon's tall size would be critical in this set as she would put together four kills. In the end, however, it would really be the fault of C.W. Post own errors that would cost them the final two points of the match.
Senior
Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.) and the Pioneers would once again use a strong start to jump out in front of the Knights. Ostapow would not only use her service abilities to get the game going, but she would also find herself involved in many different attacking opportunities for the Pioneers as she contributed ten assists in the set. The Pioneers would use different runs throughout the fourth set to take the match. The biggest would end the game, as the Pioneers would take over serving responsibilities up 17-7and end the game at 25-7.
Guadagnini would lead the team with her 14 kills, .297 hitting percentage and 16 digs, being joined in the double-digits in kills by Fisher, who would end the game with 10 kills. Fisher would end up being one dig away from her own double-double. Ostapow would end her night with a total of 37 assists.
Freshman
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) would also fall short of a double-double, as she ended the match with nine kills and 12 digs. She would however help lead the defense on the net, where she put together two and half total blocks. The team as a whole would finish with seven total blocks.
For the Knights, Gordon would end her night with 11 kills. The team would total 68 digs as well.
Next for the Pioneers is the fourth game in this six game home stand. C.W. Post will host Molloy on Oct. 19 for a 7 p.m. match in the Pratt Recreation Center.
