Mercy Nips Men's Soccer In Double Overtime, 2-1

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2010) – The Pioneers took an early lead, but Alex Cruz scored twice late in the game to give Mercy College the win over men's soccer, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.

C.W. Post slips to 6-7-1 overall with a 2-3 record in ECC play, while Mercy goes to 6-6-2, 1- 5 ECC.

The Pioneers got on the board first as Betim Bajrami (Helsingborg, Sweden) took a pass from David Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and connected for the first score of the game.

But despite holding onto the lead for almost 40 minutes, the Pioneers watched Mercy score the equalizer in the 67th minute as Cruz scored the tying goal at 67:23.

Neither team could connect for the remainder of regulation, and the first overtime saw three shots apiece for the teams but no goals.

However, Cruz struvk in the 104th minute as Collin Legge played a long pass to Cruz, who beat goalkeeper Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) 1v1 and ricocheted his shot off the post into the goal for the win.

Jorgensen made a career-high 13 saves in goal, taking the loss while counterpart Pedro Velazquez-Diaz made seven stops in goal.

Shots were evenly matched as Mercy took 28 to C.W. Post's 26.  The Pioneers took 6 corners to Mercy's five
