Volleyball Wins Two, Drops One at East Stroudsburg Tournament
EAST STROUDSBURG, PA. (Oct. 4) – Volleyball ended this past weekend's tournament at East Stroudsburg with wins in the last two matches on Saturday after dropping the opening match on Friday. The tournament improved the Pioneers overall record to 13-5 on the year, with a 1-1 conference mark.
In the opener Friday, C.W. Post dropped a tight five-game match, 3-2, to Kings College of Tennessee (19-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 13-15). Two Pioneers reached double digits in kills as freshmen Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) combined for 27. Hixson had 12 kills, while Namahoe led the team with 15. On the defensive side, senior Marilena Guadgnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) ended the match with 27 digs. Freshman Stephanie Coufal (Littleton, Colo.) also contributed 22 digs, while three other Pioneers also ended the match with double digit digs. The team would end up with 104 digs on the day, as well as eight total team blocks.
C.W. Post would bounce back the next day with a 3-1 (26-24, 17-25, 25-14, 25-22) defeat of Alderson-Broaddus College. Guadgnini turned in her sixth double-double on the year with 20 kills and 16 digs. This was the third time that Guadgnini went over 20 kills in a game this year. Namahoe would continue her strong freshman campaign during the weekend, including this match where she registered 15 kills in the match, while also contributing 8 digs. Senior Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.) would continue to add onto her assist numbers for the year, putting together 51 assists for match.
The third and final match of the weekend for the Pioneers would be against the host school East Stroudsburg. C.W. Post would end the tournament with the team's seventh 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-23, 25-16) of the year. Namahoe would reach double digit kill numbers for the 11th time this year, as she was the co-leader in kills for the Pioneers with 10. Guadgnini was the other Pioneer to reach 10 kills, as she also contributed 15 digs. This was her seventh double-double of the season. Coufal led C.W. Post in digs, tallying 19.
C.W. Post will now return back to conference play for two games, as they host NYIT on Tuesday Oct. 5 in the Pratt Recreation Center at 7 p.m. and then will travel to Mercy on Thursday.
