Comeback Effort Falls Short for Volleyball in NCAA Tournament First Round Against Adelphi, 3-2

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Nov 18, 2010) – C.W. Post's comeback effort fell short during the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as Adelphi was able to sneak out a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers (18-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 10-15). Freshman
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) had a career-high in kills as she led all participants with 20 kills. Seniors
Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.) and
Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each recorded double-doubles in their final games as Pioneers.
After falling in the first two sets by the same score, 18-25, C.W. Post looked to have its back up against the wall with the Adelphi Panthers continuing its own attack, led by Hilary Pavels and Chelsea Overholt. Through the first two sets, the Pioneers managed to hit -.026 and .125 while committing a combined in the two sets 17 attacking errors.
The third set was a quick turnaround for C.W. Post however, with sophomore
Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.) coming into the lineup and putting a fire into her teammates with her outstanding effort. The Pioneers combined as a team to hit .394 while putting down 17 kills during the third set.
C.W. Post played an outstanding fourth set, as they did not commit one hitting error throughout the match, completing 16 kills. Schroer and sophomore
Lisa Delfs (Canadaigua, N.Y.) controlled the net area with Ostapow forcing her own kills while setting up her teammates. The Pioneers took the fourth set, forcing a deciding fifth set.
With the C.W. Post fans in attendance cheering on their team, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the fifth set. However, the Panthers fought back to tie the game and then take the lead without looking back. With Adelphi increasing its lead, the Pioneers in the end fell short of completing the comeback, losing the set 10-15.
Guadagnini finished her final collegiate match with her 14th double-double on the year behind 14 kills and a team-high 23 digs. Ostapow put together a great effort as well in her final game, putting up 49 assists along with 11 kills. She also added eight kills to her totals. Schroer was one dig away from a double-double and Delfs finished the match with nine kills.
