BROOKVILLE, N.Y.
(Nov. 2, 2010) – On senior night, the C.W. Post Volleyball team was able to move to .500 in conference play, as the team earned its fifth victory of the year in conference matches on a 3-0 sweep of Mercy (25-9, 25-11, 25-12). It was a freshman that led the Pioneers though, as #Shayla Hixson# (Honolulu, Hawaii) totaled 12 kills and eight digs on the night.

Prior to tonight's match, seniors Kim Lubeski (Bishopville, Md.), Sammy Figliolia (Wantagh, N.Y.), #Amanda Ostapow# (East Setauket, N.Y.), and Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) were honored. Tonight's match was the final home contest of these four seniors' careers.

The Pioneers ended the first set on a 13-0 run, winning 25-9 behind three service aces by Ostapow. C.W. Post would also make good on nine total errors by the Mercy Mavericks during the set. Hixson and fellow freshman Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) led the Pioneers with three kills each in the set.

The second sent would see a pair of runs from the Pioneers, as the team started out the match up 10-3 and then ended the match on a 12-2 run to win 25-11. The Mavericks pushed back during the middle portion of the match. However, the early deficit was too much to overcome with C.W. Post accumulating a hitting percentage of .464 with 15 kills as a team in the set.  Ostapow also added 14 assists during the second game.

Mercy made a big to push this match to four games, jumping out to an early 1-4 lead against the Pioneers. C.W. Post would quickly erase that lead with a 7-0 run and wind up winning the match behind Hixson's five kills and Figliolia's .667 hitting percentage. The match ended at 25-12, with the Pioneers securing the set and match victory for the 19th win on the year, including the fifth conference win.

For the seniors, Ostapow would total 30 assists in the match with four service aces, Guadagnini totaled eight kills and 11 digs, Figliolia put up seven kills and 12 digs, and Lubeski contributed six digs to end their final home match as seniors. The team on the offensive side piled up 41 kills behind a .359 hitting percentage, while forcing 18 errors on the defensive side.

The Pioneers move to 19-10 on the year with a 5-5 conference mark, while Mercy drops to 3-23 on the year and 0-10 in the ECC. Next for C.W. Post will be a road match at Bridgeport on Friday No. 5 at 6 p.m.
