Football Among the Best in the PSAC on Both Sides of the Ball in 2010
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2010) – This past season was a strong offensive year for the Pioneer football program. Out of the 16 football teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, C.W. Post's offense ranked in the top five in nine different offense categories, including three different top rankings in first downs, third down conversion percentage, and total offensive plays. The team also stood out on the defensive side with some stellar individual efforts all season long.
Throughout the season, the Pioneer offense ran 786 plays during the course of game. This number ranked the team first total offensive plays, with the next ranked opponent 30 plays behind. C.W. Post was also able to hold the highest percentage in terms of third down conversions with a season ending 46.3 percent mark. This number helped lead the squad to average the most first downs per games in the conference, with 23 per contest.
Head coach
Bryan Collins and offensive coordinator
Brian Hughes guided the offense to a fourth slot ranking in scoring offense at 33.5 points per game, while being second in total offense per game at 428.7 yards a game. Senior quarterback
Erik Anderwkavich paced the offense that piled up some of these impressive numbers during the course of the season, as well as being fourth in passing offense at 239.6 yards per game through the air. Anderwkavich also contributed greatly to the 145.3 passing efficiency rating the team controlled, good for fourth in the conference. Much of the passing game success fell into the hands of senior wide receiver
Darnell Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who averaged 87.5 yards per game himself as the teams top receiver.
Anderwkavich was also the number one rusher in the Pioneer running game that ranked third in the PSAC. Along with running back group compiled of sophomore
Thomas Beverly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) and freshmen
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) and
Jeff Mack (Bronx, N.Y.), the Pioneers as a team rushed for 189.1 yards per game. The combination of running and passing helped lead the squad to 35 red zone touchdowns, ranking second in the conference.
Coach Hughes will continue to guide this impressive offensive group next year, as the team looks to improve upon this year's totals. Even with the loss of Anderwkavich, the offense should be one to watch during the 2011 season with all three contributing running backs returning to the squad.
Coach Collins and coach
Jim Gibbons also saw individuals create success for themselves on the defensive side of the football. Junior inside linebacker
Billy O'Connor (Sayville, N.Y.) led the league in tackles during the year, accumulating 125 with an 11.4 tackles per game average. Fellow junior linebacker
Ronnie Modik (Levittown, N.Y.) finished with 104 tackles on the year, good enough for fourth on the year. Modik also ranked tied for first in the league for both interceptions (5) and forced fumbles (4). Leading the league in recovering some of those forced fumbles was senior defensive end
Xavier Brown (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Brown accumulated three fumble recoveries during the year for tops in the conference, as well as finishing seventh in the league in sacks with 8.5 total on the year.
With the loss of some key senior starters, the Pioneer squad should still be a force next year in the PSAC. The offense will hope to keep things rolling while the individual performances on the defensive side will look to turn into team success as well.
