Softball Announces 2012 Early Signing Recruiting Class
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2010) – C.W. Post head softball coach Jamie Apicella announced that four players have signed National Letters of Intent. Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.), Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) have all committed to suit up for the Pioneers, beginning in the 2012 season.
Havens comes from nearby Eastport, where she was a two-time All-State and three-time All-County selection. A pitcher that also has the range to play outfield, she is a right-handed thrower in the circle and bats from the left side of the plate. She also plays varsity volleyball for the Sharks. Havens is also an excellent student in the classroom and was named to the Principal's Honor Roll in addition to being a member of both the National Honor Society and English Honor Society. Catherine plays her summer travel softball with the Long Island Anthem.
Apicella on Havens: “Catherine epitomizes a true student-athlete. She has excelled in the classroom as well as on the softball field. She is a fierce competitor who has phenomenal athletic skills to both pitch for us and challenge for a starting role in the outfield. Her speed can be of great value at the top of our line-up and we are excited for her arrival next Fall.”
Miller is a right-handed hitter that can play the outfield as well as the infield. A five-year varsity player for East Meadow, Miller also plays travel softball for Long Island Sudden Impact. She has received numerous academic honors, including the Breakfast of Champions scholastic award.
Apicella on Miller: “Samantha's work ethic and passion for the game is above and beyond her years. She is another gifted athlete who will challenge for a starting role in the outfield as well as help us offensively anywhere in the line-up. Every time you watch Samantha play she always leaves everything on the field. Her summer coach, Bill Havdouglas is very excited that Samantha is a Pioneer and feels she will make an immediate impact on our program. Her speed, strong throwing arm and the ability make things happen offensively makes her an exciting player to watch. We look forward to her arrival next Fall.”
Ehlinger is a right-handed pitcher that can also play first base and the outfield. As a freshman at Hauppauge, she tossed a no hitter and this past season she struck out a career-high 22 batters in a 2-0, 10-inning win over Eastport-South Manor. Ehlinger plays travel ball for the Long Island Sudden Impact.
Apicella on Ehlinger: “I have watched Nicole pitch now over the last several years and I am very impressed with her development and focus. She has pitched in many big games at Hauppauge High School and has carried her team over the last several years deep into the play-offs. She is a well balanced pitcher who has many pitches in her repertoire. Her experience with the Long Island Sudden Impact over the summer will help her face a high level of competition to prepare her for the college level even more. We are very excited and look forward to Nicole's arrival next Fall. She will be one of the pieces to our young pitching staff.”
Salcido is another right-handed pitcher that hails all the way from the West Coast town of Brawley, Calif. Last season, she recorded a 10-7 record with a 1.31 ERA in the circle and struck out 100 batters through 117 innings pitched. At the plate, she batted .411 and drove in 18 runs. A member of the Power Surge Gold 18-under travel team, Salcido helped lead the squad to the 2010 ASA Gold Nationals in Marietta, Ga. During the national qualifying games, she recorded a 2-0 record while pitching two complete games, including one perfect game, and allowed just two earned runs while also pitching two innings of one-hit relief. At the plate, she batted 3 for 7 with five RBI.
Apicella on Salcido: “Megan will be another young pitcher joining our staff with great promise. She is a hard throwing righty who has developed her pitches and is entering as a polished athlete. She also has the ability to hit in the middle of the line-up. She will be joining a very talented young core of pitchers who are very athletic and can provide much needed depth. We expect Megan to make an immediate impact on our program next Fall. Coming from Southern California she has experienced a very high level of competition with her travel team. We feel with the addition of Megan to our recruiting class we have created a staff with a lot of talent, versatility and depth. The future looks very bright.”
