Kulnis Sparks Softball To Doubleheader Sweep Over St. Thomas Aquinas; 8-0, 3-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 31, 2010) – Senior third baseman #Shannon Kulnis# (Flemington, N.J.) hit two home runs in the first game of a doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas as the C.W. Post Pioneers won both games, 8-0 and 3-0, in East Coast Conference softball action on Wednesday at the Softball Complex.
C.W. Post improves to 16-6 overall and 4-0 in ECC action while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 1-14 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Kulnis was 4 for 5 with five RBI and two runs scored in the two-game series for C.W. Post.
In the first game, the Pioneers went ahead 2-0 with a leadoff homer from Kulnis and an RBI fielder's choice from freshman first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.).
The Pioneers opened up the game with a five-run third inning highlighted by a two-run shot from Kulnis, a sacrifice RBI from senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.), a groundout RBI from freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) and an RBI single from Hopkins.
C.W. Post scored the decisive eighth run in the fifth inning when Hopkins hit an RBI single to center to end the game via mercy rule.
Sophomore pitcher Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) shut the Spartans down and allowed only one hit and a walk while striking out 10 batters.
Kulnis finished the game batting 2 for 2 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hopkins was 2 for 3 with three RBI and freshman designate hitter Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) was 2 for 2 with a run scored.
Sophomore Amanda Forsythe (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) took the loss for the Spartans after surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits and one walk.
In the second game, C.W. Post went ahead 2-0 in the first inning courtesy of an RBI double from Hardy and an RBI single from Kulnis.
The Pioneers added one more in the bottom half of the third when Kulnis singled to left center and scored sophomore left fielder #Kerry Fisher# (Barto, Pa.) from third.
Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) pitched six quality innings and allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three. Bettles came on in the seventh and allowed one hit with two strikeouts to earn the save.
Hardy led the Pioneers with three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Kulnis was 2 for 3 with two RBI.
The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday, April 1 when they host Northeast-10 foe Merrimack College for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
