CALDWELL, N.J. (April 28, 2010) – The No. 17 C.W. Post softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Caldwell College, winning the first game, 2-1, in eight innings before falling 1-0 in the second game.
C.W. Post improves to 39-11 overall while Caldwell improves to 35-12.
Senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) got the game-winning hit in the first game when she laced a double to left center to score freshman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) from second.
The Pioneers tied the game up in the top of the fifth when sophomore third baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) scored from third on a wild pitch.
Caldwell led 1-0 in the fourth when senior first baseman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, Calif.) doubled to left field and drove in sophomore Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, Mass.) from second.
Softy, senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.), freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.), senior first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.), and freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) all tallied two hits as the Pioneers outhit the Cougars, 11-3, in the game.
Softy's double in the first game also tied the school's career record currently held by Jill Fisher since 2007.
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) went the distance in the circle for the win and allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
In the second game, Caldwell plated the game's lone run in the bottom of the first when sophomore centerfielder Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, R.I.) came home on a wild pitch.
The closest the Pioneers came to at least tying the game up was in the top of the second when Bright hit a one-out double to right center before being stranded with two flyouts to end the inning.
Kulnis and Bright recorded the only hits in the game for the Pioneers.
Junior right fielder Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, Pa.) registered the only hit for the Cougars with a two-out single in the second.
Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, N.Y.) was credited with the win, scattering two hits over seven innings with two strikeouts.
Sophomore Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) was charged with the loss and allowed one hit with three walks and four strikeouts.
C.W. Post will close out its regular season at Dowling College on Saturday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
