Fisher Drives In Four As No. 17 Softball Splits With Dowling

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (May, 1, 2010) – The No. 17 C.W. Post softball team rallied to score two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh and defeat Dowling College, 6-5, in the second game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Golden Lions won the first game, 2-1.
The Pioneers earned the top seed in the upcoming ECC tournament and will play No. 4 NYIT on Thursday, May 9 at the Dowling Complex at 3:30 p.m.
C.W. Post improves to 40-12 overall and 25-3 in conference play while Dowling improves to 38-13 overall.
Sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) led the Pioneers offensively with three hits to drive in four runs, including a three-run double in the seventh to give the Pioneers the lead in the second game. Fisher also drove in the Pioneers' only run in the first game with a triple to right field.
The Golden Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first game when freshman shortstop Stephanie Tarango (Fontana, Calif.) belted a two-run homer against starter Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.).
The Pioneers scored one in the fifth on Fisher's two-out triple but could not push any extra runs across the plate.
Sophomore Jessie Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) stifled the Pioneer offense and surrendered one run on one hit and three walks while striking out 16 batters.
Kiser finished the game allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Tarango batted 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.
In the second game, the Golden Lions scored one run in the first when Tarango doubled down the right field line and added four more in the bottom half of the third that was highlighted by a two-run homer to center field from freshman third baseman Danielle Messina (West Babylon, N.Y.).
C.W. Post cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth that were scored on a wild pitch followed by an error on the first baseman.
In the seventh, the Pioneers scored their first run of the inning on an RBI single from senior center fielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) before Fisher followed up in the next at-bat with the double.
Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) was credited with the win after coming on in relief of starter Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) in the third and shut out the Golden Lions with only one hit allowed before Kiser came on in the seventh to close out the game for the save. Bettles allowed three earned runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
Fisher was 2 for 4 with three RBI and Medina batted 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Junior second baseman Lisa Compitello (Bohemia, N.Y.) led the Golden lions with two hits and two runs scored in four at bats.
Junior Felicia Mendoza (Bloomfield, Calif.) was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
