SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2010) – C.W. Post earned its first PSAC East division win with a 31-14 win over Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon at Seth Grove Stadium.
C.W. Post improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC East while Shippensburg slips to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in division play. The win marks the third straight year the Pioneers have opened division play with a victory. It also snaps a 15-game streak in which Shippensburg has scored at least three touchdowns in a game.
C.W. Post recorded 418 yards of offense, including 258 yards rushing as sophomore Thomas Beverly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) and freshman Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) each carried for 91 yards.
Senior quarterback Erik Anderwkavich (Queens, N.Y.) completed 9 of 23 pass attempts for 160 yards and two touchdowns and ran in a 1-yard touchdown with 19 seconds remaining in the game to ice the win for the Pioneers.
It was a long day for each squads' defense and the scoreboard remained scoreless through the entire first quarter.
The Pioneers' regained possession with 6:59 remaining in the first when junior linebacker Ronnie Modik (Levittown, N.Y.) intercepted a pass attempted from Shippensburg quarterback Steven Adams at the CWP 9 and returned it for seven yards. The Pioneers moved the ball down the field but set up for a 30-yard field goal attempt from senior Paul Stoltz (Stony Brook, N.Y.) but the kick veered left and narrowly missed the uprights.
Shippensburg endured its own struggles on offense and attempted a 26-yard field goal attempt in the second but senior defensive back Aaron Hall (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) batted the ball down, giving the Pioneers the ball at their own 20.
This time, C.W. Post made good on the opportunity and Anderwkavich found an open Darnel Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown with 3:06 left to play in the second.
The Raiders answered back in their next series and scored a TD on a 3-yard run from senior halfback Kevin Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa.) at 2:29.
But the Pioneers would not go into the half quietly and Beverly took a handoff from Anderwkavich from the 50 and ran it all the way in for their second score of the game.
Shippensburg evened the score in the third as part of an eight play, 51-yard drive that resulted in a five-yard rushing TD from Marshall at 7:49.
C.W. Post responded in the very next series with a 12 play, 62-yard drive. Anderwkavich found Williams open again and fired a four-yard TD pass at 2:12 to put the Pioneers ahead, 21-14.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Pioneers as their possessions occupied more than nine and a half minutes of the quarter. With the ball on the Shippensburg 47 to start the quarter, the visiting team got down to the 15 before Stoltz kicked a successful 32-yard field goal at 12:16.
The Pioneers stole possession from the Raiders with 4:49 left to play when sophomore defensive back Ciwan McCoy (North Babylon, N.Y.) intercepted the ball at the CWP16. The Pioneers used eight plays to move the ball to the Ship 3-yard line and Anderwkavich attempted to find an open receiver before finding an opening and hitting paydirt on his own with 19 seconds left to play.
Williams completed the game with four catches for 87 yards, including a 50-yard completion he caught one-handed in the first quarter.
Junior inside linebacker Billy O'Connor (Sayville, N.Y.) led the Pioneers' defense with nine tackles. Senior defensive end Xavier Brown (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recorded two sacks for a loss of 14 yards and junior defensive lineman Abrom Shepard (Staten Island, N.Y.) registered a sack for seven yards.
Adams completed the game with 199 passing yards on 26 attempts with two interceptions. Marshall finished with 64 rushing yards for the Raiders.
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 when it pays a visit to West Chester University for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
