Huge Offensive Output Spurs Football To 20-11 Season Opening Win At American International

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 4, 2010) – C.W. Post totaled 464 offensive yards that led to a 20-11 victory in its season opener at American International in non-conference football action Saturday afternoon at Abdow Field.
The Pioneers claimed their first season opener since the 2006 season. It was also their first win over the Yellow Jackets since 2006.
Senior quarterback Erik Anderwkavich (Queens, N.Y.) led the offense, completing 15 of 22 pass attempts for 191 passing and added 133 yards rushing. Anderwkavich scored the Pioneers' first touchdown of the game on an eight-yard sprint into the end zone and later passed for two TD's in the third and fourth quarter.
Equally impressive was senior wide receiver Darnel Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who caught seven passes for 125 yards, including a 24-yard pass from Anderwkavich for a touchdown in the fourth.
AIC totaled 283 offensive yards, including 198 passing yards from senior quarterback Rob Parent (West Warwick, R.I.), who completed 16 of 31 attempts.
The Yellow Jackets scored first with 14:56 to play in the second quarter when senior Ryan Brooks-Newton (Selkirk, N.Y.) kicked a 20-yard field goal through the uprights to lead 3-0.
C.W. Post, who struggled in its earlier drives to score, got on the board in the final minutes of the second on account of Anderwkavich's eight-yard rush. However, senior Paul Stoltz's (Stony Brook, N.Y.) point after attempt was blocked and returned by senior defensive back Nathaniel Ricks (Clinton, Md.)for a defensive PAT which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Pioneers.
The Pioneers broke away in the third when Anderwkavich completed a 14-yard pass to redshirt freshman Joe Botti (Holtsville, N.Y.) with 4:46 left in the quarter. Stoltz kicked successful PAT to boost the lead to 13-5.
It was a busy fourth quarter for the Pioneers as they recorded 143 offensive yards on 19 plays that saw extensive rushing from Anderwkavich as well as sophomore running back Thomas Beverly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) and freshman Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.).
The Pioneers' scored their final TD when Anderwkavich found an open Williams and completed a 24-yard pass as part of a five play, 67-yard series that lasted one minute and 56 seconds.
The Yellow Jackets' only score in the second half came with 58 seconds remaining in the game when Parent fired a 26-yard completion to junior wide receiver Andre Samuels (Linden, N.J.).
Junior inside linebacker Billy O'Connor (Sayville, N.Y.) led the C.W. Post defense with 12 tackles, including eight solos. Junior Lou Scala (Coram, N.Y.) added seven tackles and combined with junior Alex Mauro (Bayville, N.Y.) for a sack. Senior defensive end Xavier Brown (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added a nine-yard sack in the second quarter.
The bulk of AIC's rushing came from sophomore running back Mike Mayo (Roosevelt, N.Y.), who registered 83 yards on the ground.
Senior linebacker Terrence Holley (Bogota, N.J.) led the Yellow Jacket defense with 12 tackles.
C.W. Post returns to action on Sept. 11 when it hosts its home opener against PSAC West foe California (Pa.) with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
