Volleyball Disrupts Queens Comeback Effort With 3-2 Victory
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2011) – After going up 2-0 to start the match, the C.W. Post volleyball team needed a fifth a deciding set to hold off Queens College, 3-2 (26-24, 25-19, 17-25, 23-25, 16-14). The night also marked “Senior Night” for the 2011 season.
C.W. Post improves to a 16-14 overall record while now standing at 7-6 in the ECC with only one match remaining before the conference championship. On the other side, Queens falls to 8-18 overall with a record of 3-10 in the conference.
The first set to begin the night proved to be clear demonstration for how the night should go as neither team could grow a substantial lead. After being down 21-23 late, the Pioneers rallied a 5-1 run to take the opening set. Two
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) kills contributed to the last two points of the match.
The Pioneers went into the second set looking to take a 2-0 lead, and the team made good on that mission. Growing a lead as large as seven at one points, C.W. Post used a .290 hitting percentage to earn the victory.
Stephanie Schwarz (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) helped achieve that percentage with 11 assists during the set.
The Knights of Queens were not ready to take a 3-0 loss, as the team took full control of the third set to push the match to a fourth set. The Knights largest lead was the final spread of eight as Jovana Pavlovic put down nine kills during the third set. The Pioneer offense was not able to get going either during the third, as the team only achieved eight kills to go along with six attacking errors.
C.W. Post almost created a comeback during the fourth set to earn the set and match victory, however, the Knights stopped any such plan with a strong finish to the set. Pavlovic once again led the Knights attack with five kills while her teammate Suzanne Byrne also tallied the same number of kills.
A comeback effort was needed in the fifth set again for C.W. Post, and this time the effort was successful. Queens looked to be putting the finishing touches on the match with a 14-12 lead in the deciding set, however, the Pioneers reeled off four straight points to complete the comeback and earn the match victory.
For the game, Pavlovic lead all participants with 26 kills. She also tallied 19 digs and two solo blocks for the night. Stephanie Schroeder and Ceren Kilic shared setting duties on the night, as the two combined for 57 assists. Schroeder also accumulated 11 kills over the five sets for a double-double evening.
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) took the lead for the Pioneers in kills as she finished with 15 on the night to go along with 13 digs. Namahoe also ended with a double-double as she totaled 14 kills and 16 digs.
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) also had a solid night, putting together 12 kills and a team leading seven total blocks (three solo, four assisted). Schwarz finished her night with 49 assists to lead the Pioneers.
Before tonight's match, seniors
Andrea Nolan (Ridgefield, N.J.) and
Laura Garbarino (Nutley, N.J.) were recognized as the two graduating members of the 2011 C.W. Post volleyball team.
The Pioneers will conclude the regular-season on Tuesday, Nov. 8, with a road match against conference rival Molloy. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
