Men's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, Takes Down NYIT 87-72
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2011) – Senior guard
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) scored 26 points to lead three Pioneers in double figures, and C.W. Post outmuscled New York Institute of Technology behind 18 rebounds from freshman
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.), leading men's basketball to an 87-72 victory in the East Coast Conference opener for the Pioneers on Wednesday evening.
C.W. Post improves to 7-1 to start the season and 1-0 in the ECC, while NYIT slides to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Pioneers lead almost wire-to-wire, with the exception of NYIT's early 3-2 lead at 18:46 in the contest. C.W. Post steadily built its lead in the first half, pushing to an eight-point spread (17-9) at 14:36, then going on a 12-0 spurt that saw the Pioneers up by 20 points with 10:49 left in the first half.
NYIT fought back, however, whittling the visitor's advantage back down to as little as five points with just over one minute to play in the first half, and C.W. Post went into the halftime break with a 42-35 lead.
The game remained tight in the second half, as the Pioneers pushed their lead to 11 points at the 16:46 mark, but watched the Bears climb back to within three after an NYIT layup at 14:22 (49-46).
The Pioneers engineered a 11-4 run to push their lead back to double digits, taking a 60-50 lead with 10:50 remaining. From that point on, it was all Pioneers as C.W. Post never allowed its advantage to slip below double digits, with its lead topping out at 18 points as the Pioneers coasted to the 15-point victory.
Bonneau's 26 points tied NYIT's Kayvon Roberts for the game-high, as Bonneau shot 11-21 from the floor.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored 20 points on 6-9 shooting, going 8-8 from the free throw line. Williams registered his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and a monster night on the boards with 18 rebounds.
The Pioneers shot 47% from the floor (31-66) and 71% from the free throw line (22-31). C.W. Post struggled mightily from deep, making just 3-17 attempts from beyond the arc, but held a sizeable advantage on the glass, 47-34, leading to 21 second chance points.
Roberts scored his 26 points on 10-20 shooting, while Antoine Brown was the only other Bear in double figures with 17 points.
C.W. Post continues action next Tuesday as it travels to non-conference Adelphi for a 7p.m. matchup.
