KISSIMMEE, FLA. (March 14, 2011) – The C.W. Post used strong opening innings in both games today to help improve to 3-1 in Florida and overall in the early stages of the season. The Pioneers defeated Caldwell College in the first game, 7-3, and then defeated #7 University of Indianapolis, 3-2.
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a pop single down the left field line behind third base, which was then kicked on an attempt at the ball by the leftfielder, allowing Chamberlain to advance to second. Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) then doubled down the left field line, scoring Chamberlain. Two batters later, Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) hit her first collegiate homerun over the left field fence, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
With a new pitcher on the mound for the Cougars, the Pioneer quickly greeted Kourtney Wilson with two runs during the bottom half of the fourth inning. Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) scored a run after singling then stealing second with Hopkins reaching on a dropped ball in center that also allowed Palazzo to come around from second. Hopkins was then brought in by an RBI single by Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
The Caldwell Cougars then scored three runs off of five hits against Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.), making the score 5-3 after five and half innings. However, Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) drove in some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Fisher and Hopkins with a two RBI single, tallying the final score of 7-3.
Kiser pitched seven innings, giving up three runs to earn her second victory of the season. Kiser is now 2-0 in the first two days of the season. Hopkins went 2-4 in the game, scoring three runs with one double and a stolen base.   Hagenah went 3-4, including the first inning homerun that notched both of her RBIs.
The Pioneers had little time to enjoy the first game victory, as the squad turned around right after to face the seventh ranked team in the nation in Indianapolis. Greyhound starting pitcher, Lauren Edwards, only lasted 1/3 of an inning against the Pioneers.
Hangenah got the scoring going for the Pioneers with an RBI single, scoring Chamberlain and pushing Fisher to second. After a Bright walk, Britney Agostini (Dover, Del.) then drew a walk to force Fisher home from third.
With Audrey Ernst on in relief for Edwards, the Pioneer hitting continued with Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) hitting a RBI single to left, scoring Hagenah and giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead after one half inning.
The Greyhounds quickly rebounded in the bottom half of the first, scoring two runs against starting pitcher Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.). After not lasting as the starting pitcher in the top half, Edwards got some revenge with an RBI single to account for one run. Jennifer DeMotte then scored for the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
The bats on both sides then went silent, as the game quickly turned into a pitchers' duel. Berardi retired 11 of 12 at one point, with the negative being a walk given up during the fourth inning. The senior earned the win with the final of 3-2, making her 1-1 on the season. Berardi pitched the full seven innings, scattering six hits, striking out six, and having zero earned runs.
The Pioneers move to 3-1 to start the season down in Florida. C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday, March 16 with a 9 a.m. game against Minnesota-Duluth and an 11 a.m. against Wisconsin-Parkside.
