Softball Sweeps Past American International, 1-0 and 6-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2011)
The C.W. Post softball swept through a pair of victories against American International College, taking the first game by a 1-0 score in eight innings before winning the second game, 6-0, in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Groff Field.
 
C.W. Post improves to 13-5 wins its fifth straight contest to improve to 13-5 overall. Meanwhile, American International dips to 5-11.
 
In the first game, the teams were deadlocked at 0 through seven innings to force an extra frame. The Pioneers pushed the winning run across the plate in the eighth when sophomore Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) singled down the right field line to score freshman shortstop Britney Agostini (Dover, Del.) from second. Agostini re-entered the game to run at second after freshman Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.) laced a double through the right side to set up for the scoring run. 
 
Sophomore first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) led the Pioneers in hits, batting 2-for-3. Senior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) went the distance to earn the win, scattering two hits over eight innings with seven strikeouts with one walk.
 
In the second game, the Pioneers jumped out to an early lead with two runs scored in the top of the first inning on account of an infield error.
 
The visiting team put three more runs up in the second inning that was highlighted with RBI singles from junior centerfielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) and Bright.
 
C.W. Post added one more run in the top half of the sixth when Hopkins drove in a run on a sacrifice foul out to right field.
 
Bright finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Senior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) got the job done in the circle for the win after she fanned seven batters and let up just two hits and a walk.
 
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday when they travel to northeast Massachusetts to take on Merrimack College at 3 p.m.
