Softball Offense Erupts For 34 Runs To Sweep NYIT; 23-0, 11-2

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 16, 2011) – It was an offensive slugfest for the C.W. Post Pioneers as they swept a pair of games against New York Institute of Technology, 23-0 and 11-2, Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference softball action.
C.W. Post improves its overall record to 26-8 overall and 12-4 in conference action. NYIT drops to 4-25 overall and 1-5 in the ECC.
In all, the Pioneers outscored the Bears, 34-2, on 20 hits and batted .455 as a team. Junior second baseman
Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) was 6-for-8 at the plate in both games, with five doubles and a three-run home run, and drove in a team-high 11 runs.
In the first game, the Pioneer bats drove in 23 runs on 19 hits to win the game in five innings.
The first inning, the Pioneers put up a 4-0 lead. Freshman left fielder
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a double to left center from sophomore first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.). Junior centerfielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) drove in Hopkins with a double down the left field line and was waved home when Bright doubled to right center. Freshman third baseman
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) reached with a walk and eventually scored the fourth run on an infield fielding error.
The second inning was full of fireworks as the Pioneers were busy running on the base paths. Bright scaled the wall with a three-run shot - her seventh of the season. Junior right fielder
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) hit an RBI single up the middle. The offense continued as Fisher drew an RBI walk to score Capella from third for the Pioneers' seventh run of the inning. And with the bases loaded, freshman
Britney Agostini (Dover, Del.) came to the plate and scored Palazzo from third with a single to right field. Bright followed up with a double to bring home Fisher and freshman
Andrea Smith (Milford, Mass.), who earlier had reached with a walk. The final run of the inning came when junior
Kim Kessel (Glen Cove, N.Y.) came in to pinch hit and singled to score Agostini. In all, the Pioneers scored eight runs on 11 hits and four errors and led 15-0 through two innings.
Senior pitcher
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) and the Pioneer defense held the Bears hitless and scoreless from the second inning all the way through the fifth. Their one hit of the game came in the first inning when Melina Trujillo singled down the right field line. Sophomore
Linda Amarante (Cheshire, Conn.) came in to pitch the final two innings and no-hit the Bears while striking out one.
The Pioneers continued swinging the bats well and added another right runs in the top half of the fifth. Agostini reached on an outfield error and Chamberlain and Palazzo both came home on the play. Bright hit her third double of the game to score Agostini and Smith. Capella reached with an RBI walk while Kessel, who earlier was hit by a pitch, came around to score on an infield error. Chamberlain plated the final two runs of the game with a double to left center.
Every Pioneer batter recorded at least one run in the game for C.W. Post. Bright was 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and two runs while Chamberlain batted 3-for-6 with two RBI. Hagenah was 1-for-1 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Berardi earned the win after allowing just one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
Natasha Milosevich was charged with the loss after letting up seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two.
In the nightcap, C.W. Post once again took an early lead with a five-run first inning that was highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Fierro. The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the second inning courtesy of an RBI double from Hagenah and a run scored on a wild pitch to lead 7-0.
NYIT scored its first runs of the day with two in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice and an RBI single from Martha Redondo.
C.W. Post added a single run in the third when Chamberlain rapped a double to left center that scored junior catcher
Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.), who had reached on a leadoff walk.
The Pioneers put the game out of reach in the top half of the fifth as Bright hit her fifth double of the series to clear the bases with three RBI.
Chamberlain was 4-for-4 in the game with an RBI and three runs scored while Bright batted 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Senior
Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) got the win and scattered two runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Junior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched three innings in relief and let up one hit while issuing four walks with three strikeouts.
C.W. Post returns to action on Sunday when it travels to play St. Thomas Aquinas.
