SPARKILL, N.Y. (April 18, 2011) – Freshman third baseman Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) batted 5-for-6 at the plate, including three doubles and a home run, to help lead C.W. Post over St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-0 and 7-1, in an East Coast Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Spartan Field.
C.W. Post improves to 28-8 overall and 14-4 in conference play and extends its win streak to 10 games. St. Thomas Aquinas dips to 12-18 overall and 7-11 in the ECC.
The Pioneers put up a 2-0 lead in the first inning, beginning with an RBI double from sophomore first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) and followed by an RBI single from an RBI single from Hagenah.
Still not content with just two, the Pioneer offense decided to unload and scored seven runs on seven hits in the fourth inning.
Junior rightfielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) drove in the inning's first run with a single to score freshman designated player Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.), who earlier reach on an outfield error and advanced on a single from sophomore catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.). Freshman Britney Agostini (Dover, Del.) came into the game as a pinch runner for Capella and came around to score on a single off the bat of Hopkins. Hagenah added to the total with a two-RBI double and crossed the plate in the next at bat when junior second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) doubled to score two. Bright advanced home to score the the inning's final run after the third baseman committed an error on a single from Julich.
Chamberlain was 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored while Hopkins was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Hagenah batted 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run while Bright was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Senior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) went the distance, letting up three hits while striking out one over five innings pitched.
Megan Sweezy was tagged with the loss after allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout.
In the second game, it was STAC who went out front with a 1-0 lead in the second after Sweezy cleared the outfield fence.
The Pioneers got the run back in the top of the fourth when Hagenah matched the previous run with a home run – her 11th of the season – to tie the game.
The teams played three innings of scoreless ball before the eighth inning when C.W. Post got its groove back and score six runs, beginning with an RBI single from junior centerfielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) that scored Agostini from third. Hagenah laced a bases-clearing double for two and Bright sent her home with an RBI single. Capella scored Bright with a ground out to short and junior catcher Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) drove in Julich with an RBI single.
Hagenah was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and Fisher was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Senior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) scattered five hits and one run over eight innings and matched her career-high of 14 strikeouts for her 13th win of the season.
Maura Power took the loss, giving up seven runs on 11 hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
C.W. Post is back in action on Tuesday, April 19 at home against Molloy College. First pitched is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
