BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 21, 2011) – The C.W. Post softball team collected a pair of wins over New York Institute of Technology in an East Coast Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Softball Complex. The Pioneers defeated the Bears, 8-0 and 13-2, in a pair of five-inning games.
C.W. Post improves to 30-8 overall and 16-4 in the ECC. NYIT slides to 5-30 overall and 2-10 in the ECC.
The Pioneers spotted themselves a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, beginning when freshman leftfielder Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) singled to third, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. Freshman third baseman Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) and junior second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) brought the heavy bats to the plate and hit back-to-back home runs to right field.
C.W. Post added a run in each of the second and third innings. Junior centerfielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, N.Y.) recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the second and sophomore catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) hit an RBI double to right center.
Still not content with their five-run lead, the Pioneers drove in three more as Fisher hit an RBI single down the left field line and Bright hit her second home run of the day with a two-run shot to right field.
Senior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) pitched five scoreless innings, scattering three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Bright was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Chamberlain was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Natasha Milosevich took the loss after allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and two walks with a strikeout. Lynsey Michaud was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Bears.
In game two, the Pioneers scored nine runs on nine hits in the first inning that included RBI hits from Fisher, sophomore shortstop Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.), junior catcher Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.), and Chamberlain. Fisher drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single up the middle and added an RBI double in her second at bat later in the inning.
C.W. Post pushed its lead to 12-0 with three more runs in the second that was highlighted by a two-run triple of the bat of junior rightfielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.). Palazzo also scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
NYIT scored its first run in the third when Martha Redondo homered to right field.
The Pioneers plated their 10th run of the game in the fourth when freshman Britney Agostini (Dover, Del.) hit a sacrifice flyout to centerfield that scored sophomore Linda Amarante (Cheshire, Conn.) from third.
The Bears added one run in the top of the fifth when Bridgette Kirschmer hit an RBI single up the middle.
Fisher finished the game batting 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Chamberlain was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a pair of runs. Morcone was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) earned her 14th win of the season after pitching three innings and letting up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Junior Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) came in relief and pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.
Jackie Enlund was tagged with the loss for the Bears after allowing seven runs on six hits and walk. Redondo was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs.
C.W. Post returns to action on Friday when it plays a pair of road games against Mercy College, beginning at 1 p.m.
