BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 9, 2011) -
Senior pitchers Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.)and Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) were both recognized prior to the game for their outstanding accomplishments over the past four years in green and gold, and both responded accordingly, pitching shutouts to lead the Pioneers to two victories as C.W. Post swept both ends of a doubleheader from Bridgeport by identical scores of 8-0 in both games.
C.W. Post improved to 20-8 on the season and 8-4 in conference play, while Bridgeport slides to 5-17 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Berardi worked in and out of trouble in the first, loading the bases with one out but striking out two batters to work out of the jam, and sophomore first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) got the Pioneers on the board with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the inning.
The Pioneers pushed across four more runs in the second as junior center fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) and freshman third baseman Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) each roped two-run doubles.
Fisher led off the fourth with a triple and scored on Hagenah's RBI fielder's choice groundout to make the Pioneer advantage 6-0.
C.W. Post ended the game in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule as Fisher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run, and Hagenah's infield single plated the final run of the game.
Berardi earned the complete game shutout with five innings pitched, scattering three hits and striking out five batters. Fisher went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Hagenah was 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead the effort, while freshman shortstop Britney Agostini (Middletown, Del.) chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.
The second game saw the Pioneers score their runs in bunches, as they plated four in the third and another four in the fourth, and backed another strong pitching performance on the day, this time by Kiser, who allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters in the shutout.
An two-run single by sophomore catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) accounted for two runs in the third, while a bases-loaded walk and out outfield error on Capella's single allowed the other two runs to score.
In the fourth, a bases-loaded bomb over the left field fence by Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) gave the freshman right fielder her first career home run and gave the Pioneers the eight-run advantage that would eventually end the game via the mercy rule.
Capella led the Pioneers with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate.
C.W. Post will travel to Queens for a 12 noon doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
