No. 7 Dowling Ousts No. 22 Softball From ECC Championships, 1-0

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (May 6, 2011)
– A one-run double in the bottom half of the fifth inning was all that it took for No. 7 Dowling College to advance in the East Coast Conference Softball Championships with a 1-0 win over No. 22 C.W. Post Friday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.
 
Dowling improves to 41-5 overall and will face Molloy College on Saturday in hopes of taking two from the Lions for the championship title. C.W. Post slips to 36-14 overall and will await Monday's announcement of seedings in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
 
The run was scored with two outs in the fifth when Krystil Hofmann laced a double to right field that scored Jessica Roque from first base.
 
The Pioneers nearly tied the game in the top of the seventh when junior centerfielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) came to the plate with junior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) standing on second and lifted a single to center. Palazzo easily rounded third base and slid into home but was ruled out on the tag on a close call at the plate to end the game.
 
Felicia Mendoza, who came in to pitch after the second inning for starter, Jessie Stavola, scattered five hits and two walks with five strikeouts for the win.
 
Hofmann led the Golden Lions with one hit and an RBI.
 
The Pioneers outhit the Golden Lions, 7-3, and were led in hits by Palazzo, who had two singles. 
 
Senior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) had one of her strongest outings of the season as she let up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters.
