Volleyball Captures First ECC Victory of 2011 With 3-0 Sweep of the District of Columbia
Washington D.C. (Sept. 20, 2011) – A balanced attack and opponent mistakes helped lead the C.W. Post volleyball squad to its first ECC victory of the season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) sweep victory over the District of Columbia. The win also pushes the team to the .500 mark once again with a 6-6 overall mark, including a 1-1 clip in ECC play.
During the first set of play, five different Pioneers players figured into the kill column. Senior
Laura Garbarino (Nutley, N.J.) and junior
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) led the group with three apiece. As a collective unit the Pioneers notched a .435 hitting percentage during the set, connecting on 12 kills in 23 attempts while allowing surrendering two errors.
The Pioneers looked to manage another decisive victory in set two when the team led with a 24-17 advantage, looking to put the Firebirds in a 2-0 hole in the match. However, the Firebirds put the pressure on the Pioneers by going on a quick 3-0 run to bring the game within four. Sophomore
Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) then connected on one of her three kills in the set to give the Pioneers the set victory. Fellow sophomore
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) helped secure the victory with her five kills on a .400 hitting percentage during the second frame.
Namahoe then put the exclamation point on the match victory with a service ace to close out the third set and give the Pioneers the sweep victory. The Pioneers used a 9-2 run to close out the third set and seal the set and match win. Sophomore
Stephanie Schwarz (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) paced the offense during the closing set with seven assists on the team's 11 kills.
Delfs and Namahoe completed the game with the team lead in kills at eight. Namahoe also contributed nine digs and a block in each the assist and solo fashion to complete a solid night for the sophomore. As a team the Pioneers earned points through nine service aces, with junior
Emily Hoehn (Kearney, Neb.) contributing three to lead the team.
The Pioneers are back on the road this Saturday for a tri-match against Northeast 10 opponents Pace and Merrimack. Pace will host the event, with C.W Post's first match set to begin against Pace at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match with Merrimack.
