Men's and Women's Basketball Travel to Mercy Wednesday Night
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2012) – Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be looking to extend a pair of two-game winning streaks as conference play shifts onto the road as the teams travel to Mercy on Wednesday.

Deirdre Moore and the women's basketball team of C.W. Post head into Wednesday with a 10-5 overall record that includes pulling to an even 2-2 in conference play after Saturday's victory over St. Thomas Aquinas, 58-51. In the game, the Pioneers held a 45-39 rebounding edge and also tallied six blocks to have firm control near the basket.
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) played well behind 11 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
Felicia Joyner led the Pioneer in scoring on the afternoon with 14 points.
The C.W. Post offense continues to be the best in the conference in scoring terms, as the team leads the ECC with 72.8 points per game and is also leading the conference in shooting percentage with 40.2 percent from the field. The team has also controlled play around the backboards, having the best rebounding average per game in the conference with 46.7 boards a game. That average is 8.6 rebounds a game better than the Pioneer opponents.
Continuing to lead the Pioneers in scoring, Joyner has her average at 17.0 points a game while shooting a team-leading 38.1 percent from downtown. Marciniak is also close to a season double-double with 11.6 points a game to go with 9.7 boards a game.
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) has knocked down a team best 29 shots from three-point range and is taking advantage of her free throw opportunities, shooting 93.8 percent from the stripe.
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) also continues to pace the Pioneer offense with 4.5 assists a game.
The Mavericks of Mercy enter Wednesday's night game winless on the season at 0-11 which includes a 0-3 conference record. The latest decision was last Tuesday, Jan. 3, as the Mavericks lost at New York Institute of Technology by a final score of 83-69. Five different NYIT players score 10 or more points. Mercy was able to hold a 45-40 rebounding edge as Jasmine Williams led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Simone Williams also notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
On the season, Mercy is averaging 59.6 points a game and has given up the most points per game in the conference with 74.9 points a game allowed to opponents. The team is also being outrebounded on average per game of 5.8 rebounds a game. The Maverick defense has been a strong point as the team is averaging an even 4.0 blocks per game.
Both Simone Williams and Jasmine Williams have been the lead players for Mercy thus far this season. J. Williams has averaged a team lead in points, 17.2 a game, and rebounds, 9.8 per game. She has also accumulated a team-high with 24 steals. S. Williams has averaged 9.0 points per game and 6.3 rebounds a game to go with a conference best 5.6 assists per game.
The last time these two teams met was during last year's season on Feb. 5, 2011. The game resulted in an 84-76 victory for C.W. Post with
Janea Aiken scoring 26 points. Marciniak also had a solid game with 17 points and three blocks. S. Williams has 23 points for the Mavericks while J. Williams chipped in a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
The second match-up of the night will feature the Pioneer men who are coming off a 66-58 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas as the team has improved to 9-4 and 3-0 inside the conference. In the win over St. Thomas Aquinas, the Pioneers generated 15 points off turnovers and held a 40-32 rebounding margin.
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) took home a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as he shot seven for eight from the free throw line.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) also had an all-around game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Chris Casey has continued to lead the number one scoring offense in the conference as his Pioneers have scored 85.1 points a game while shooting an efficient 45.3 percent from the field. However, the team has given up the most points a game in the conference with 79.6 points a game to opponents. The squad has controlled the glass over teams, hauling in 43.8 boards a game and has held an average of 9.3 rebounds a game over teams.
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) still is the top scorer in the conference with 22.7 points a game while knocking down a team leading 35 shots from beyond the arc and has also contributed 3.2 assists per game. Carberry has put himself as one of the top scorers in the conference as well with his 20.0 points per game average while also pulling down 6.6 rebounds a game. Allen has been consistent with his low-post scoring and rebounding numbers as he has averaged 13.5 points per game and 9.6 rebounds a game to go with 50 percent shooting.
Mercy comes into the game with a 0-3 conference mark that contributes to a 1-11 overall record this season. The last game was back on Wednesday, Jan.4, as NYIT took a 74-56 victory over Mercy as the Mavericks committed 24 turnovers over the course of the game. The Mavericks did manage a 41-38 rebounding total over NYIT despite the loss. Joseph Pope and Colin Senior each tallied 11 points and five rebounds for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks are being outscored on average per game with a scoring margin of 16.7 points per game. The team however does hold a 39.0-37.2 rebounding edge over opponents and also averages 3.42 blocks per game.
Senior leads the team as the lone double-digit scorer with 13.9 points a game as he hit a team leading 22 shots from downtown. He also contributes 5.0 rebounds a game. LeBrandon Smith currently holds the team lead in rebounding with 6.3 boards a game. Pope has shot 52.0 percent from the field to help push his scoring average to 9.3 points a game.
These two teams last played each other during last season's schedule on Feb. 5, 2011 with C.W. Post taking home a 95-89 win on the home court of Mercy. Bonneau put together a team-high of 24 points to go with 5 rebounds and five assists while the team shot 54.4 percent from the field. Senior helped the Maverick effort with 19 points and nine rebounds.
The women's game is set for 5 p.m. on the Mercy campus in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. tomorrow night. The men will then follow that contest at approximately 7 p.m.
