Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Go For Five in a Row at Queens on Wednesday
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2011) – Matching each other win for win the past four games apiece, both the men's and women's basketball teams will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18, as the Pioneers will travel to Queens for a doubleheader.
Winning four straight to improve to 4-2 in the conference and an overall record of 12-5, the women's team is coming off a Saturday, Jan. 14, win over Molloy, 80-51. The Pioneers managed to shoot 53.2 percent from the field while only allowing the Lions to shoot 32.0 percent. C.W. Post also had total control on the backboards, hauling in 52 rebounds compared to only 19 grabbed by Molloy. Many of those rebounds help lead to 17 second chance for the Pioneers as all 10 players for C.W. Post got into the scoring column.
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) had a solid all-around game with nine points and nine rebounds while
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) tallied eight points, four rebounds, and six assists.
An efficient shooting percentage of 41.2 percent has led to 74.0 points per game average for the Pioneers. The team has also moved the ball well, putting together 15.6 assists a game on 27.4 field goals made a game. The Pioneers have also controlled the rebounding battle in mostly every game, averaging to outrebound opponents by 10.5 boards a game.
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) has hit on a total of 112 field goals this season to accumulate a 17.2 point per game average.
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has missed two games this season but has still benefited from strong play with 11.1 points a game and 9.9 rebounds per game.
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) leads the team with 2.0 shots made from three a game while
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) is top on the squad with 4.3 assists a game.
The women's basketball team of Queens goes into action on Wednesday with a 1-14 overall record and is winless inside the conference with a 0-5 mark. The latest decision came this past Saturday, Jan. 14, with a loss at Mercy, 73-48. The Knights committed 28 turnovers as Mercy tallied 19 steals. Nicole Caggiano led the effort for Queens with 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Caitlin Hopkins came off the bench in a strong way to contribute seven points and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Knights have only managed to generate 49.2 points a game as an offense, the lowest output in the conference. On the other end, the team has given up 69.5 points a game as defense. The rebounding totals have remained close between the team and opponents, only being outrebound on average of 2.0 boards a game.
Caggiano comes in as the only Queens player to have a double-figure scoring average, putting together 12.8 points a game in 32.9 minutes played a game. She also leads the team with 1.9 threes made per game. Catherine Pastor holds the team lead in rebounds with 6.2 a game while also chipping in 9.9 points a game.
The last time these two matched-up against one another was in the ECC Quarterfinals last season, on March 2
nd. The Pioneers came away with the 67-61 victory to advance as Joyner led the way with 22 points and four steals. As a team, the Pioneers managed 16 steals.
After Saturday's, Jan. 14, win over Molloy, 70-48, the men's basketball team of C.W. Post has improved to 5-0 in the ECC and have grown to an 11-4 overall record after winning four in a row. During the win over Molloy, the Pioneers had a 52-30 edge on the glass and forced 16 turnovers on the defensive end.
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) led the team with 12 rebounds with
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) connecting on four shots from beyond the arc to tally 18 points.
Getting to the free throw line has benefitted the Pioneers as 19.5 shots made from the line have helped create a 85.6 point per game average. The team has also remained aggressive on the glass to have an 8.9 average rebounding margin.
Bonneau has made 41 shots from downtown to help push his team leading scoring average to 21.9 points per game. He also leads the team in assists at 3.4 a game and total steals with 21.
Vaughn Allen and
Tobin Carberry each have hit 65 free throws this season to both hold the team lead. Allen also leads the team with 9.4 boards a game to go with 13.5 points per game. Carberry has been an efficient scorer with his 19.5 points per game while also pulling 6.2 rebounds a game.
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) has denied three shots each in the past two games to bring his shot blocking total to 23 on the season.
The men's team of Queens is coming off a victory this past Saturday, Jan. 14, to improve to 4-11 overall and hold a 3-2 conference record. The 85-77 victory came at Mercy as Jeremiah Mordi led the way with 33 points, six rebounds, and five assists. The Knights shot 53.6 percent as a team and also held the advantage on the glass with a 32-29 margin. Khalil McDonald also chipped in 18 points.
To this point this season, the Knights have been outscored by opponents on average 68.6 points to 62.9 points a game. Opponents also hold an average 3.0 rebounding margin on Queens. The Knights have been shooting well from the charity stripe, having a 71.9 percentage from the line as a team.
McDonald has been strong for the Knights, holding the team lead in both points (18.7 points a game) and rebounds (7.5 rebounds per game). He also shot the ball well with a 44.7 shooting percentage from the floor while also shooting 80.6 percent from the free throw line. Mordi has shot the ball efficiently from distance, putting together a percentage of 40.4 percent from three to help boost a scoring average of 13.5 points a game and also has brought in 5.1 rebounds a game.
These two teams met earlier in the year in a game that was counted as a non-conference tilt back on Dec. 3 with C.W. Post coming away with a 79-63 win. Carberry led the effort with 20 points and seven rebounds with McCann achieving his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. McDonald paced Queens as the only player in double-figures with 30 points along with 12 rebounds. The Pioneers were able to produce 23 second chance points and also used turnovers to create 18 points.
Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Queens College with the women's teams scheduled to get things started followed by then men's game at approximately 7 p.m.
