Men's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, Tops Queens 80-64

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 18) – Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) each scored a game-high 17 points to pace the men's basketball team to an 80-64 win over Queens College on Wednesday evening.

The Pioneers, winners of five straight, improve to 12-4 overall and are the sole owners of first place in the ECC play with a perfect 6-0 record. Queens falls to 4-12 overall and evens at 3-3 in conference play. 

C.W. Post jumped out to a quick lead in the contest, edging into double digits before the halfway mark of the first half.  But Queens chopped the lead back down to four points with 7:29 left in the half after an 8-0 lead, and a three-pointer by Edil Lacayo tied the game at 30-30- with 5:31 to play.  C.W. Post held a slim lead, but the Pioneers were able to buoy the lead with a trey by Bonnea with 48 seconds left, followed by a traditional three-point play with eight seconds left, giving the Pioneers a seven points lead heading into halftime. 

Coming out of the half, the Pioneers regained their offensive spark and pushed the lead back into double digits just two minutes into the half, and then into the 20-point range.  Queens would never come closer than 16 points for the remainder of the contest as the Pioneers rolled to the win. 

In addition to Allen and Bonneau, Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored 13 points, and Tyaun Williams (Newark, N.J.) registered a double doubled with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  The Pioneers shot 40% from the floor (28-70) and 73% from the free throw line (19-26).  They also held a 49-42 edge on the board.

The Pioneers travel to District of Columbia on Saturday for a 3:30  p.m. contest.
