Doubleheader Set For Saturday at District of Columbia for Men's and Women's Basketball
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2011) – The men's and women's basketball teams will travel to the District of Columbia for the first conference meeting between the programs.
The women's team for C.W. Post enters the contest on Saturday, currently riding a five game win streak that has pushed the squad's overall record to 13-5 and have now moved to 5-2 in the conference after Wednesday's 80-58 win over Queens. As a team, the Pioneers knocked down 10 shots from beyond the arc led my four on the part of
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who finished with 16 points.
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to help C.W. Post hold a 39-29 edge on the glass.
Through this five-game winning streak, C.W. Post has had an average margin of victory of 17.6 points a game to help push the season's overall margin of scoring averages to 10.6 points. The team has generated a solid offense behind 15.5 assists per game to move the ball well as a unit. Dominance on the boards has continued as well, with the rebounding margin between the Pioneers and opponents sitting at 10.4 rebounds a game.
Joyner continues to lead the team in scoring with a 17.1 point per game average that has been achieved through an efficient 42.9 percent shooting from the field.
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) has totaled 34 shots hit from three-point range to lead C.W. Post, as her scoring average has gone up to 9.2 points a game. Missing the past few games,
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) will look to pick up right where she left off when she returns. The junior forward is close to a season double-double average with 11.1 points a game to go with 9.9 boards a game. Kopp has been solid inside for the Pioneers, shooting 55.7 percent from the field to lead the team and has averaged 8.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
The District of Columbia women's basketball team also comes in to Saturday's contest riding a win streak, with the Firebirds winning the past three decisions. The team is now 4-2 inside the ECC while also being 13-3 overall after Wednesday's home victory over Mercy, 84-61. The Firebirds shot the ball with a 46.8 shooting percentage on 20 assists and were also aggressive on the defensive end with 19 steals to help force 27 turnovers. Dohnay Banice led the way with 24 points and nine rebounds while Janelle Junior totaled 19 points and seven steals.
The Firebirds have been separating victories on opponents on average of 9.9 points a game as a team while scoring 70.7 points per game and dishing out 14.1 assists a game. Opponents have outrebounded the District of Columbia on average of 1.2 rebounds per game, but the Firebird defense has backed that up with 13.9 steals a game.
Playing in only 12 of the team's 16 games this season, Jamilia Bonner is the current point per game average leader for the Firebirds with 18.2 points a game. Lauren Brittingham has shot the ball both from the field and free throw line with percentages of 41.8 percent and 80.4 percent respectively to help produce a 13.6 point per game average. Banice has been the lead rebounder for the squad with 8.7 rebounds a game to go along with 9.8 points per game.
In the overall series, the District of Columbia has won three games to the Pioneers only winning two games. The last meeting came back on Jan. 2, 2010 with a C.W. Post 71-46 win at the District of Columbia. The Pioneers shot 49.0 percent to help spur the win with
Janea Aiken totaling 19 points and
Alyssa Lombardi pulling down 12 rebounds.
The Pioneers' men's basketball team has remained undefeated in the conference with a 6-0 mark after Wednesday's win over Queens, 80-64. The win also pushes the team's overall record to 12-4. C.W. Post used a 38-28 advantage in points scored in the paint to help influence the win while
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) and
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) each totaled 17 points and eight rebounds.
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) pulled in his second double-double on the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Behind 6.4 threes made a game and 19.4 free throws connected on per game, the Pioneers have pushed an offense that is scoring 85.3 points per game. The squad also has controlled the battle on the backboard against opponents with a rebound margin of 8.8 rebounds per game. Shots have also started to become difficult around the rim for opponents as the Pioneer defense is averaging 3.6 blocks per game.
Bonneau has continued to be the top-scorer for C.W. Post with 21.6 points per game while shooting 43.1 percent from the field. He has also put together 3.3 assists per game to lead the squad. Allen is coming closer to a season double-double average with 13.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while also leading the team in shooting percentage with 50.8 percent shooting.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) continues to be consistent in the both scoring and rebounding columns of the stat sheet with a 19.3 point per game average to go with 6.1 boards a game.
Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.) has been a solid shooter off the bench with 26 total threes made this season.
District of Columbia's men's team has impressed thus far this season, and that continued this Wednesday with a 90-58 win over Mercy while improving to 5-1 in the conference and 14-2 overall. During the win, the Firebirds put home 15 shots from long-distance and shot 47.6 percent from the field. The group also forced 15 turnovers while only giving up seven.
The Firebird offense has generated 80.6 points a game behind 7.5 shots made from three per game while only giving up 70.8 points per game to opponents. The interior defense has also accumulated 5.7 blocks a game to help keep opponents outside. Rebounding has been a close contest between the Firebirds and opponents as the District of Columbia holds a slim .2 average rebounding margin.
Brandon Herbert joins Bonneau as two of three players in the conference averaging 20-plus points a game with Herbert's average at 20.1 points per game. He has grabbed 5.3 rebounds a game while taking advantage of free-throw opportunities with a 90.9 shooting percentage from the line. Nigel Munson has provided all-around play for the Firebirds with 19.5 points per game, 6.4 assists a game, and 5.1 rebounds a game. Dyrek Jones and Diyaaldin Kelly have continued to generate similar numbers with Jones putting together 6.4 rebounds a game and 2.2 blocks, while Kelly sits at 6.3 boards a game and 2.3 blocks.
The two men's teams have not met since 1988, when the District of Columbia earned a 77-67 victory on Jan. 23. In terms of the all-time serious, C.W. Post holds the edge with two games won to only one lost.
Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on the campus of District of Columbia with the women getting things started, followed by the men at 3:30 p.m.
