Men's Basketball Takes Down District of Columbia, 92-85

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 21, 2012) – Four Pioneers in double figures, led by senior guard
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) with 32 points, pushed the men's basketball team to its sixth straight win, a 92-85 decision over the District of Columbia Firebirds on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.
The Pioneers improve to 13-4 and remain perfect in conference play with a 7-0 slate. UDC loses its second straight game, and now stands at 14-3 overall and 5-2 in ECC play.
The first half was a back and forth affair that saw six ties and six lead changes. The teams battled from the get-go, with the Firebirds taking an 8-4 lead but C.W. Post answering to tie the game at 12-12 just under six minutes into the game. The Pioneers pulled ahead 18-12 with three quick baskets, but UDC stormed ahead 26-25 with 10:14 on the clock.
The teams traded the lead back and forth for the remainder of the half, with the Pioneers pulling ahead but UDC staying right behind them, and the hosts took the lead yet again with 1:23 left in the half with a layup by Nigel Munson that put the Firebirds up 40-38.
But Bonneau hit a three pointer with 58 seconds left and was fouled on the shot, completing the four-point play to give C.W. Post a 42-40 lead heading into halftime.
The Firebirds tied the game right out of the halftime break, but
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) gave the Pioneers the lead right back with a layup at 19:33. The visitors extended their lead little by little and held a ten-point advantage (61-51) with 12:40 on the clock. The Pioneers continued to remain in control and led by a game-high 12 points with 3:38 to play.
UDC made on last run, cutting the Pioneer lead down to just two points with 1:15 to play following two free throws by Brandon Ennis. But Allen went 4-4,
Terry Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.) 2-2 and
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) 2-2 from the free throw line to seal the victory for C.W. Post.
Bonneau's 32 points came on 11-21 shooting with five three pointers. Allen had a strong game with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Carberry added 12 points, going 10-10 from the line.
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) added 10 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds. The Pioneers held a 53-43 advantage on the boards, as they shot 40% from the floor (28-69) and 30-40 from the charity stripe.
The Pioneers are off until next week when they travel to Dowling for a 3:30 matchup on Saturday, Jan. 28.
