No. 17 Women's Swimming Takes Down Bridgeport on Senior Day, 154-100
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2012) – The C.W. Post women's swimming team won its final match of the regular season, defeating the University of Bridgeport 154-100 on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center. Prior to the contest, seniors
Sandra Kirstein (Hollviken, Sweden) and
Cornelia Hanes (Stockholm, Sweden) were recognized for their achievements over the past four seasons.
Two new individual pool records and one new relay event pool record were established by the Pioneers, as the hosts were winners of 12 of the 14 events on the afternoon, including three victories apiece from Hanes and
Tamara Garriock (Duncan, Canada), two by
Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden), a win by
Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.) and wins by two Pioneer relay teams.
In the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay team of Pettersson, Garriock, Hanes and
Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) won with a final time of one minute and 47.01 seconds. Pettersson and Garriock posted back-to-back wins as Pettersson won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.96, and Garriock won the 100-yard breakstroke with a time of 1:06.01.
In the 50 free, Hanes set a new pool record, breaking her old record set just last week with a new time of 23.77.
In the turning point of the match, with the Pioneers trailing Bridgeport in the team score, the Pioneers finished 1-2-3 in the 100 free, as Hanes posted her first victory of the day with a time of 52.64, followed by strong swims by
Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) and Morrison, who finished at 53.99 and 54.08, respectively. The Pioneers took the lead behind the strong performance and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the meet.
Pettersson won again in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.51, followed by Hew's victory in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing at 2:29.08. Garriock then won the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:02.80, and Hanes won her final event of the afternoon with a 57.58 in the 100 fly. Garriock came back quickly for the 200 IM and won again, completing the event in 2:08.33, a new pool record.
The Pioneers' 400 free relay team capped off the afternoon with a win and a new pool record of 3.37:67, swam by Delehanty,
Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden), Morrison and Pettersson.
Head coach
Maureen Travers and the Pioneers will travel to East Stroudsburg next Saturday for the ESU invitational, starting at 12 p.m.
