Men's and Women's Basketball Doubleheader on Wednesday Against NYIT on Post Pride Day
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2012) – After being on the road over the past two weeks, the men's and women's basketball teams will return home Wednesday night for a conference doubleheader against the New York Institute of Technology as the campus will be celebrating Post Pride Day.
Coming off a 69-57 loss to Dowling this past Saturday, the women's team will be looking to regroup on Wednesday after falling to 5-4 inside the conference with a 14-7 overall mark.. The Dowling Lions used an advantage of 19 free throws made compared to only nine made for the Pioneers while also forcing 17 C.W. Post turnovers. Three players figured into double-figures for the Lions while
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) was the only Pioneer to eclipse double-figures with 15 points.
Behind 27.3 field goals made per game, C.W. Post has shot 41.1 percent through 21 games this season while holding opponents to a 37.3 shooting percentage. This has helped the Pioneers hold an 8.5 scoring margin over teams while also holding that same number in the rebounding margin column. The offense has also been helped by the extra pass as the team has put together 15.2 assists a game.
With a total of 135 field goals made this season, Joyner continues to be the lead scorer for C.W. Post with a 17.0 point per game average. Closing in on a double-double for the season,
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has brought her rebounding average to 9.4 rebounds a game while holding at 10.3 points a game.
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) holds the team's lead in assists per game at 4.0 while
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) continues to be the leader in three point field goals made with 37 through the first 21 games.
With a 13-7 overall record and 6-2 conference mark, the NYIT Bears' women's basketball team last conference game was a 78-56 win over Queens last Wednesday, Jan. 25. The Bears forced 30 Queens' turnovers during while coming up with 18 steals. On the glass, NYIT pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and five starters scored double-figures. The squad last played Monday evening, with a 75-66 win over Dominican. Chloe Johnson put up a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bears.
Outscoring opponents on average of 3.0 points per game this season, the Bears have created 22 turnovers a game to help generate offense. With those turnovers, the team's defense has totaled 13.0 steals per game.
Cierra Baker remains as the only player in the ECC among women's basketball individuals with a season double-double behind 18.1 points a game and 10.1 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 3.6 assists a game and leads the conference behind 4.5 steals per contest. Nikki jo Rotolo has also had a strong season across the board for the Bears, putting together per game average of 12.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
These two rivals met earlier in the season during a Dec. 6 doubleheader at NYIT with the Bears coming out with a 76-74 overtime win. Baker ended the night with 26 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Marciniak notched a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds with Joyner coming away with 20 points, four assists, and three steals.
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 15 boards.
The Pioneers' men's basketball team enters play Wednesday night with an undefeated 8-0 record in the ECC with a 14-4 overall record after Saturday's 69-67 win over Dowling.
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) connected on the game winner with one second left in regulation to finish with 20 points.
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led the team with 23 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Pioneers hold a 43-34 edge in the rebounding column. C.W. Post also forced 13 turnovers while only giving up nine.
In 18 games, the Pioneers' offense has scored 46.1 points per second half in games while totaling 84.7 a game. This has led to an 8.4 scoring margin over for opponents for C.W. Post. The team has also used 19.9 free throws a game to demonstrate the offense's aggressiveness as is the team's positive 8.9 rebounding margin over teams.
Bonneau goes into Wednesday as the team's and conference's leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, a position he has held for most of the year. He has connected on 48 shots from beyond the arc while also coming away with 24 steals on the defensive end.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) is also a potent scorer for the Pioneers, shooting 46.0 percent to accumulate 18.6 points per game. Allen is also an efficient shot taker, shooting 50.0 percent from the field to put up 14.8 points a game and pulling down 9.6 rebounds per contest.
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) has been a strong rebounder for the Pioneers on both sides of the ball, as 3.5 of his 7.9 rebounds per game come on the offensive end.
The men's basketball team of NYIT came to an even 4-4 conference record, 7-10 overall, after last Wednesday's, Jan. 25, 69-65 victory over Queens. After being down four at halftime, the Bears came back to outscore Queens by eight during the second half. NYIT came away with 14 assists while only turning the ball over eight times. Dominic Scurry led the offense with 15 points while Azel Prather, Jr. totaled eight points and eight rebounds.
To this point, NYIT has scored as many points per game as the team has given up with an even average of 72.7 on both sides. The Bears have helped generate 15.8 assists per game with a 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. The offense has also shot 44.5 percent from the field while coming away with 6.8 steals on defense.
Kayvon Roberts has been one of the top performers for the Bears with 14.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Scurry leads the team with 4.3 assists while putting in 13.1 points per game. The other individual averaging double-figures with 10.9 points per game is Prather while he also leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game.
Earlier in the season, the Pioneers came away with a road victory over the Bears by a final score of 87-72 on Dec. 7. Bonneau led the Pioneers with 26 while Williams contributed 14 points and 18 rebounds to help give C.W. Post a 47-34 edge on the glass. Roberts led NYIT behind 26 points and seven rebounds.
Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. for the women's teams, with the men to follow at around 7 p.m.
